For the most part, today’s most popular bands are saccharine and heartless, wallowing in the tepid waters of mass appeal. Likewise, fifteen minutes could easily be wasted trying to find the intensity and fury of old in today’s hardcore scene. Do yourself a favor – save the time spent on vapid, consumer-driven music and lifeless hardcore and dive into the deep end with Aneurysm Rats instead.

There’s absolutely nothing innocuous or safe about the Philly group’s debut full-length, Dying To Live. One quick glance at the cover art and that much is apparent. Even the band’s name makes it well known that there is zero room for compromise or appealing to the masses. Of course, that’s not to say that the LP won’t turn heads and win the hearts of punk rock’s most discerning critics either.

Featuring ex-members of Paint It Black, None More Black, One Up, Go Time and Crumbler, this five-piece hardcore outfit has crammed an album’s worth of fast, loud, visceral noise into fifteen razor-sharp minutes of raging-yet-catchy hardcore punk. It serves as a true departure from what has overtaken the airwaves, fills our venues and overruns cyberspace. And not a moment too soon.

Dying to Live’s twelve tracks of unadulterated craziness are completely unmatched by anything that’s out today; spare perhaps Britain’s Gallows. With an unyielding, explosive, old school sound not unlike that of Bad Brains or Black Flag, this band is making their own waves and promise nothing less than a typhoon anytime soon.
