Boris Smile is making quite a name for themselves with their eclectic and intelligent brand of indie pop. The band has already self-released two highly acclaimed albums in their young, yet burgeoning career. A. Wesley Chung is the mastermind and his vision remains one of playful grandeur. That continues on the band’s newest release, the Beartooth EP. With the addition of Seth Shafer, whose arrangements provide the band with a darker sound, Boris Smile begins to explore exciting new frontiers.

As listeners have become accustomed, Boris Smile continues to consist of an abundant cast of characters and the Beartooth EP is no different. These five songs boast a dozen plus contributions from a range of talented musicians. Boris Smile wows with ambitious arrangements and instrumental depth. Outside of the typical band instruments, Boris Smile delves into horn and string arrangements that add a greater emotional quality to Chung’s unique tales. With the Beartooth EP, Boris Smile makes a subtle but thrilling departure while still maintaining their endearing charm.

Beartooth EP radiates a touching intimacy. The EP’s first two songs cast haunting atmospheres. But no matter the approach, Chung and Boris Smile are never at a loss for touching lyrics and memorable melodies that enthrall the listener. The marriage of Chung’s words with Shafer’s arrangements seems like a brilliant rebirth for a band that was already headed for spectacular heights.
