Brian Bond appeared on New Brunswick, New Jersey’s basement scene a few years ago, bringing his personal neo-folk music onto a circuit usually reserved for punk rock. While he might be musically disconnected from what the infamous city usually produces, Bond’s folk tendencies remain connected to an indie mindset. His songwriting, while well-crafted and polished, possesses such innocence and warmth that washes over and envelopes the listener. Two years in the making, Brian Bond’s Fire & Gold is a stunning pop masterpiece by a relatively unknown from Jersey. Apparently, anonymity suits Brian Bond well.
Fire & Gold continues to develop Brian Bond’s expansive pop songwriting as he moves freely, never limiting himself artistically. Bond balances the acoustic singer-songwriter form with a lyrical intensity not previously seen in his work. There is a bold intimacy achieved throughout Fire & Gold’s extensive reach. At times it also begins to border on the psychedelic. Thick with backwards fuzz guitar, percussion, processed electronic drums, and analog synthesizers, Bond even explores the orchestral as he is backed by a string quintet for one song. Fire & Gold achieves a striking charm that is impossible to dismiss and only grows stronger with each listen. Brian Bond is that rare artist that practically begs (and deserves) to be heard by a much wider audience. Fire & Gold is a magical listening experience and it seems to only scratch the surface of where Bond could be heading. Brian Bond should be anonymous no more.
