Originally released as a CDEP by Amnot Records in May of 2007, Faces In The Architecture’s post-rock reverb, dynamic time signatures and swelling atmospherics owes much to bands like Explosions In The Sky, but the warm textures, experimentation and earnest vocals tend to evoke indie rock heroes such as Built To Spill and The Appleseed Cast. Building The State is both dynamic and moving while simultaneously weaving a subtle backdrop of mesmerizing sound. You can stream a few tracks on the band’s myspace page.

The band also has some November dates as well.

ONE WIN CHOICE – New Vinyl / Upcoming Tours
——————————————————-

* New 7-inch on Jump Start
* Nine-day tour with American Armada begins today
* Three-week tour in Oct / Nov with Antillectual (Oct 17 – Nov 09)

——————————————————-

ONE WIN CHOICE (Toms River, N.J.) has just announced that their upcoming three-song 7-inch will be released by Jump Start Records in early 2009. The band should have copies in late October though, just in time for their show at The Fest in Gainesville, F.L.

A total of five songs were recorded in September by Mike Rummel at Below Sea Level. Rummel has worked with The Bouncing Souls, Spanish Bombs, Pitch Black Blonde and Gimme Drugs. Three of the tracks will appear on the 7-inch while the remaining two will be available exclusively as digital downloads. Of course, anyone who purchases the vinyl will receive mp3s for all five songs.

The band has also planned a fair share of touring for the next two months, beginning today with a nine-day trip through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana with American Armada.

In October and November, One Win Choice will be hitting the road for three weeks with label mates Antillectual. Jump Start will be releasing the U.S. vinyl version of the Belgium band’s latest full-length, Testimony, on October 21st. More on those dates soon, but as previously mentioned, both bands have been confirmed for The Fest.

Into It. Over It. – Year-Long Recording Project Completed

By , 18 September, 2008, No Comment

INTO IT. OVER IT. – 52 Songs In 52 Weeks
- All Available For Free Download!
——————————————————-

* Final song in Evan Weiss’ 52-week recording project posted today
* For a limited time download free MP3s for all 52 tracks
* Songs being remixed / remastered for re-release on iTunes

——————————————————-

Over the course of the past year, INTO IT. OVER IT., the alias and mouthpiece for Philadelphia native Evan Weiss (The Progress / Up Up Down Down), has written and recorded exactly one new song every week for the past 52 weeks.

Today, the project – or at least the current phase of it – comes to an end as the final song has been posted. Check it out here.

And while you’re at it, why don’t you grab the previous 51 offerings as well? They’re all available in MP3 format and will remain on the site as free downloads for the next two weeks. Everything is currently being remixed and remastered by Steve Poponi (Up Up Down Down) and will be re-released via iTunes in October. Weiss is also planning on an eventual Into It. Over It. CD / Vinyl release. If you’re interested in being a part of that, drop him an email.

Over It. Into It. was conceived by Evan Weiss as a means to break free from a musical rut, as well as an autobiographical outlet to document that quickly passing thing we call “life.” The first song was posted on his 23rd birthday (09/27/07) and for each of the following 51 weeks Weiss tackled the ambitious task of writing and recording one new song for the span of a year.

52 weeks = 52 songs: a stat even more impressive considering that nothing was composed in advance, as well as the time constraints involved in such an undertaking. Of course, none of that would matter if the music didn’t hold up. No worries there as there are some really amazing indie rock songs on full display, ranging from tender to tough, sweet to stinging.

Most of the instruments were played by Weiss and the majority of songs were recorded at Gradwell House by Steve Poponi. The last few weeks of music was recorded on the road, however, as Weiss has become the full-time touring bassist for Equal Vision band, Damiera

While this year-long Into It. Over It. project has come to an end, Weiss has no plans on retiring the band. He’ll continue to tour with Damiera and soon he’ll begin a new Into It. Over It. adventure. He’s still not sure what exactly, but check the website in another week; he’ll be posting a wrap up – thoughts and reflections – on the experience, as well as speculation on the future of the band.

GGO VI – Daley Unleashes Losing Entry

CHUCK DALEY – Returns To Dubious Roots with Non-Meat Entry
* Anasazi “We’re All Human Beans” Burger To Debut at Great Grill Off VI
——————————————————-

- Flips proverbial bird to participants, attendees
- Reveals five point plan for eventual exclusion from future GGOs
- Totally grossed out by excessive talk of Pete’s sausage

——————————————————-

Virtually guaranteeing a last place finish and possible banishment from future competitions, Great Grill Off forefather and champion procrastinator, CHUCK DALEY, is pleased to announce his entry in this year’s prestigious GGO VI.

“I intend to pay homage to my grilling origins by cooking up some Anasazi ‘We’re All Human Beans’ Burgers,” Daley stated this afternoon while carefully choosing his outfit and seriously contemplating whether he should skip the competition altogether.

He continued, “My grilled Portabella mushroom entry from the first GGO netted my all-time best finish and may have ‘sealed the deal’ in scoring with then-future wife and current part-time vegetarian Angela Vogel Daley.”

The Anasazi Bean – also known as the New Mexican Cave Bean or Jacob’s Cattle – is a hearty variety with a sweet, nutty flavor and mealy texture. And while the unique combination of the beans with sauteed vegetables and a bouquet of secret spices certainly won’t remind anyone of sinking their teeth into dead, bloated, char-grilled flesh, the Anasazi Bean Burger delivers a hefty, flavorful wallop that’s sure to satisfy even the most voracious carnivore.

It is also worthwhile to note that Anasazi Beans contain less than 25 percent of the carbohydrates that are the primary source of flatulence in most dry beans. In other words, it’s safe for the ladies.

In that respect, Daley freely admits that he’s counting on the chick vote, along with a growing number of meat-wary attendees – particularly those with warranted aversions to dishes with the words “flank,” “skirt” “cubanos,” “satay” or “Dodd” in the title. He’s also pretty sure that at least half the people will be totally creeped out within the first ten minutes of Pete continually alluding to his sausage.

Of course, the first-time father and owner of Beartrap PR recognizes that frying up some beans will likely ensure a dead-last finish and possible exile from future competitions, but also acknowledges that it’s imperative he continue his streak of doing something completely retarded at the Great Grill Off. However, Daley vows to avoid past transgressions, outlining a five-point plan to guarantee that only new, original missteps will cause this year’s inevitable collapse.

1. Show up at least one hour before competition time (this will never happen, fyi)
2. Under no circumstances should one purchase a new grill the day before said festivities
3. Buy enough food for everyone. Even people you don’t particularly care for
4. Crazy costumes and ridiculous get ups do not make a winner…but they sure as hell can’t hurt
5. Pimp out your ultra-adorable five-month old son and pretend he just told you that Pete tried to touch him with his sausage

All in all, Daley is cautiously optimistic about his entry, likening it to a mystical unicorn named Sparkles from the planet Awesomonia who just so happens to wield a giant trombone-shaped bazooka stuffed with magical rainbows and kitten purrs.

Yeah…it’s that good.

“At the very least, perhaps my delicious Bean Burgers can aid in the digestion of all that questionable meat which is sure to be lodged in people’s guts for days following the competition.”

The Great Grill Off VI will held at reining two-time champion and perennial suck-up Tony Mecia’s home this Saturday, September 20, 2008. Festivities begin at 5pm, grub starts at 6.

Look Mexico – U.S. Tour / New Digital EP

LOOK MEXICO – Fall Tour Update / New Digital EP
——————————————————-

* U.S. Tour begins today
* Shows with Fake Problems, Cobra Skulls, Bear Colony, The Winter Sounds
* For song EP, Gasp Asp, now available digitally

——————————————————-

Look Mexico (Tallahassee, F.L.) hits the road today for a month-long tour of the U.S.

The band’s newly converted veggie oil-powered bus will take them westward for a week of shows in Texas and Oklahoma with Bear Colony before joining up with Fake Problems and Cobra Skulls for eight days of Left Coast shenanigans. Finally, the boys will conclude their national expedition in the Southeast playing shows with The Winter Sounds.

In early October, Look Mexico will take a short break before heading back out for two additional weeks of touring along the East Coast. Eventually, they’ll end up where all Beartrap bands seem to be ending up on Halloween weekend: at The Fest in Gainesville, F.L. More info on those dates soon.

The national tour coincides with Lujo Records‘ digital release of Gasp Asp, the band’s newest four song EP. You can pick it up from iTunes here.

For a limited time, you can grab a free mp3 from Gasp Asp. Check out the first track, “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark Are You?” here.

Earlier this year, Lujo released The Crucial Collection and is also responsible for unleashing Look Mexico’s awesome debut full-length, This Is Animal Music, upon the world in 2007.

Gasp Asp will be receiving the vinyl treatment very soon as well; a three song seven inch version of the EP will be available in early October. Stay tuned for a pre-order news, as well an announcement regarding the stupid label responsible for this inevitable plastic disaster…

As always, I suggest you catch one of these shows if possible. Look Mexico never fail to excite and entertain. And if you’re lucky, you might get spit on. Just kidding (sort of).

Slingshot Dakota – Fall Tour

SLINGSHOT DAKOTA – Fall Tour Update
——————————————————-

* U.S. Tour begins today
* First two shows = Street Smart Cyclist’s last two shows EVER

——————————————————-

Today and tomorrow, Brooklyn, N.Y. / Easton, P.A. duo Slingshot Dakota kicks off a two-month tour of the U.S. in style, playing what is sure to be two amazing shows with Street Smart Cyclist .

Of course, the news is a tad bittersweet as the Street Smart Cyclist boys have decided to call it a day. The festivities at tonight’s show in Brooklyn – as well as tomorrow’s Allentown, P.A. gig – will be the band’s last. It’s a shame too; Street Smart Cyclist’s sound combined jazzy, intricate emo and joyful punk rock abandon in a way that always evoked a warm feeling of nostalgia for bands like Cap’n Jazz while also pointing toward new ideas and a progression of their sound.

They leave us with an acoustic tour EP and a three-song seven inch…one of the first releases I ever worked for Beartrap and which remains a favorite to this day. Rumor has it that the band’s last few songs will eventually be released on vinyl and cd format. It’s a silver lining, I suppose.

Back to happier thoughts, namely Slingshot Dakota on tour. Most of September and October is booked / being booked, but there are a few shows that the band is trying to nail down. If you can help out, drop me a line or send an email directly to Tom and Carly at slingshotdakota@hotmail.com.

Slingshot Dakota’s latest full-length, Their Dreams Are Dead, But Ours Are The Golden Ghost was released in early 2008. Throughout the record, fuzzy, nimble keys collide with expolosive drum work, triggering heartfelt songs about friendship, community, living on the road and ultimately, following your dreams. Golden Ghost is a unique mix of sweet indie-pop melodies and DIY-inspired enthusiasm, and Slingshot Dakota’s music has never felt so honest and moving. Recorded by Latterman’s Phil Douglas, you can order a copy directly from the band via their myspace page or pick one up at a show.

O PIONEERS!!! – U.S. Tour Update
——————————————————-

* Tour begins next Tuesday (Aug 26 – Sep 29)
* Shows with The Gaslight Anthem, Polar Bear Club, Samiam and American Steel
* Finishing up new full-length for Asian Man Records

——————————————————-

O Pioneers!!! (Houston, TX) will be leaving for a month-long tour of the U.S. beginning next Tuesday, August 26th.

The trip will take them westward to California, back through parts of the Midwest and will eventually wrap up with a week throughout the Southeast and Texas with The Gaslight Anthem. The band will also be playing shows with Polar Bear Club, Samiam and American Steel.

Additionally, O Pioneers!!! are currently booking a week-long tour in October with Bridge And Tunnel as both bands make their way to The Fest in Gainesville. More info on those dates soon…

In other news, the band has just finished recording their sophomore full-length, Neon Creeps, which should be out sometime in November on Asian Man Records. They will also be contributing a song to a split seven inch with Mike Park on Suburban Home Records.

And finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t make some snarky comment about how the punk rock trail blazed by O Pioneers!!! over the past two years is littered with a ridiculous amount of vinyl – most of which Mitch Clem has provided artwork for. So I’m just going to point out that if you own all of them, you are a very dedicated fan, but perhaps you should take a closer look at this obsession with seven inches that has ruined your life and emptied your bank account. It’s a sickness, dude.

Jena Berlin – New Vinyl and Tours

JENA BERLIN – New Vinyl / Upcoming Tours
——————————————————-

* New 7-inch available for pre-order
* Quo Vadimus on vinyl
* Best 5 day tour EVER (with Scream Hello, Static Radio NJ, more)
* European tour with Antillectual (Sept 05 – 21)

——————————————————-

Philly’s Jena Berlin has just announced that their upcoming 7-inch, This Is Yours As Much As It Is Mine, is now available for pre-order from Jump Start.

Limited to 300 copies, pressed on red vinyl with hand-printed sleeves and inserts, the 7-inch contains two brand new songs as well as a digital download coupon for both, plus two additional tracks not included on the vinyl. The four songs were recorded by Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer’s Vince Ratti, who has also worked with Circa Survive, None More Black, Valencia and Achilles. You can currently stream “The Great Plains” on the band’s myspace page. You can also stream “Foolish Optimism” at Jump Start’s myspace page.

Also, for anyone pre-ordering the 7-inch, you can pick up Jena Berlin’s two long players, Passion Waits As The Program Keeps Going and Quo Vadimus, for a mere five bucks each.

Speaking of Quo Vadimus, Jena Berlin’s amazing 2007 sophomore full-length will also be receiving the vinyl treatment from Ass-Card Records in Europe. That’s right: I said Ass-Card. More details soon on how you can pick that up, but it should be available for their upcoming European tour.

Before their trek overseas, the boys will be leaving next Wednesday for a short five-day tour with Scream Hello. They’ll be joined by Static Radio NJ on a few of those dates, as well as cast of amazing bands: Bridge And Tunnel, One Win Choice, The Ergs, Sakes Alive and Nakatomi Plaza. Seriously…how ridiculously awesome is that going to be? I never wanted to be a roadie so much as right now.

Changing gears slightly, it’s worth noting that Scream Hello’s phenomenal upcoming full-length, Everything Is Always Still Happening, will be released on September 9th by Red Leader Records. The band’s four-song teaser EP, Smart & Stupid, is available now from the label as well.

Coincidentally, Static Radio NJ’s equally amazing debut full-length, An Evening Of Bad Decisions, will also see its official release by Black Numbers on September 9th. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can still stream the entire record at Punknews.org.

The August 29th show (see below) in the bands’ shared hometown of New Brunswick will serve as the record release for both albums. Additionally, SRNJ will have another all-ages release show in New Brunswick on the 31st at The Loft with Seasick and Rapid Cities.

Up Up Down Down – Last Show Ever

By , 15 August, 2008, No Comment

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start – Last Show Ever!
——————————————————-
* Saturday – August 16 @ Audubon Auction House
* Free acoustic show tonight @ Tunes in Marlton, NJ
——————————————————-

Long-running, long-named indie outfit Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start will be playing their last show ever tomorrow night at The Auction House in Audubon, NJ.

For all you wimps and sensitive types – or for that matter, anyone who can’t make it to Saturday’s festivities – the band will also be playing an acoustic pre-last-show show tonight at Tunes in Marlton, NJ.

Joining Up Up Down Down for both performances will be Lincoln, Nebraska’s Tie These Hands.

While Up Up Down Down’s touring schedule has been admittedly light over the past couple years, the early part of their career found them traveling the country at a time when indie meant independent and emo had nothing to do with jabbing yourself in the arm with your dad’s rusty screwdriver. That is what kids are doing these days, right?

According to front man Steve Poponi, “We have been doing this band with various line-ups for about 10 years, and after making Worst Band Name Ever, I am happy to go out on a good note and pursue other fun stuff (fatherhood, golf, taste testing).”

The last decade has blessed us with some amazing music from Up Up Down Down: the seminal debut full-length And Nothing Is #1, the equally impressive follow-up EP, Perris, CA, and their last release, the aforementioned Worst Band Name Ever. They were also one of the first bands to dive into the realm of free music (waaaay back in 2005) with The Internet EP and the Girls Names EP. Both are still available for download, as are additional releases, videos and other odds and ends. Check it here.

It’s unclear what the future holds for Poponi, Up Up Down Down’s one constant over the years. He’ll certainly be involved with indie rock in some capacity as he continues to record music for bands at his Gradwell House studios. It’s a good thing for me, since a big chunk of the Beartrap roster (Jena Berlin, Scream Hello, Braindead, Into It. Over It., Makeout Party, Brass) have recorded albums there. Either way, if you’re anywhere near the Philly area, it will be well-worth your time to attend these shows. After all, it’s the end of an era. A really great era.

Ryan Russell Photography Update

RYAN RUSSELL (Photography) – Big Ol’ Mess of New Photos!
——————————————————-
* Massive site update
* Exclusive – on tour with Against Me!, Paramore video shoot, Underoath in the studio
* Plus new pics of Death Cab For Cutie, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Torche, Fake Problems, Harvey Milk, Pelican, Henry Rollins, more
——————————————————-
Photographer RYAN RUSSELL recently posted a large update of 161 new photos on his infinitely browsable website.
No joke…you could literally spend hours combing through some truly amazing live, press and off-the-cuff shots of bands like These Arms Are Snakes, Minus The Bear, Russian Circles, Taking Back Sunday, Ted Leo, Fugazi and The Melvins, not to mention some great candid photos of comedians David Cross and Sarah Silverman, actor John Krasinski, Chunklet’s Henry Owings and producer Steve Albini, just to name a few.
Russell’s latest update includes terrific new pics of Death Cab For Cutie, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Torche, Fake Problems, Harvey Milk, Pelican, My Chemical Romance, The Color Fred, Vampire Weekend and Henry Rollins among others. Oh…and some dudes in a band called Look Mexico. I hear they’re okay.
The Birmingham, Alabama native also hitched a ride with the boys in Against Me! for a week on this summer’s Warped Tour. Lots of never-before-seen candid shots of backstage shenanigans, autograph sessions and of course, the band live on stage. Go here for your viewing pleasure.
Additionally, the update contains photos of Paramore on the set of their video shoot for “That’s What You Get,” as well as a sampling of Underoath studio pictures Russell took for a book documenting the recording process that will be included in the deluxe edition of their upcoming album Lost In The Sound of Separation.
Again, if you’re not familiar with Ryan Russell, go here and introduce yourself to one of the most talented, hardest working photographers in indie rock. The scope of his amazing work spans everything from New Found Glory to New Mexican Disaster Squad. You may have seen his photos in Rolling Stone, Spin, Alternative Press, New York Times, Rock Sound and Playboy Magazine, and his pictures have been used in album art for Hot Rod Circuit, Black Cross and Patton Oswalt’s Werewolves & Lollipops.

Of course, it’s not just the quality of his shots that’s so impressive but also his ability to capture more than the simple live shot or the typical press photo. Russell has shared a tour bus with Ben Gibbard, David Bazan, the aforementioned Against Me!, Paramore and Taking Back Sunday. He’s captured rehearsal sessions for Converge, Death Cab and Minus The Bear, and he has photographed Mastodon‘s video shoot for “Colony of Birchmen” and “The Wolf Is Loose.”

If you’d like to contact Ryan about taking some photos for you, drop him a line here.

THEY AND THE CHILDREN – East Coast Tour (July 25 – Aug 03)
——————————————————-
* In support of debut full-length HOME
* Stream the entire album at Punknews.org

Middletown, Connecticut’s THEY AND THE CHILDREN is leaving today for a short tour of the East Coast in support of their debut full-length HOME.

The record – which is available in both CD and vinyl formats – was released by Kill Normal on July 1st, 2008. You can pick up a copy from the band on tour or from the label here.

Expanding on TATC’s brand of crushing, epic hardcore laid out on their 2005 EP, Thoughts On Becoming A Ghost (Tor Johnson Records), Home is even more bombastic and vibrantly dynamic, alternating between thrash-inspired riffage, slowly-churning, ominous grooves and soaring, melodic interludes. The album is a testament to the band’s commitment to the DIY community, as well as a call for solidarity between those of us who realize that society is becoming so commercialized that it can barely be considered a “culture” any more.

Head on over to Punknews.org and stream the album in its entirety. You can also grab two free mp3s for the songs “Mechanical” and “Invisible.”

Into It. Over It. – Forty and Feeling Sporty

INTO IT. OVER IT. – Hits Week 40 In Year-Long Recording Project
——————————————————-
* New Song, …And I Bite My Nails, up now (free mp3)
* 40 down…12 To Go!

INTO IT. OVER IT., the latest vehicle for Philadelphia native Evan Weiss, has posted its most recent offering titled …And I Bite My Nails. You can grab a free mp3 here.

While you’re at it, download the previous 39 songs as well…and feel free to re-post and share with your friends!

…And I Bite My Nails is the 40th track in an ongoing series which finds Weiss tackling the creation of one new song every week for the span of a year. That’s 52 songs in 52 weeks: an impressive feat, especially considering that nothing has been composed in advance – not to mention the time constraints involved in writing a song in the span of seven days (52 times in a row). I mean, I wrote 34 jams yesterday afternoon, but whatevs.

Weiss, who is also a member of The Progress and has played with Up Up Down Down and It’s A King Thing, conceived Into It. Over It. as a way to break free from a musical rut and as an autobiographical means to document that quickly passing thing we call “life.” The first song was posted on his 23rd birthday (09/27/07) and the last will go up on October 2nd, 2008. Most of the instruments are played by Weiss and the majority of songs are recorded at Gradwell House by Steve Poponi.

Again, everything from the past 40 weeks is available for free downloading and sharing. The easiest way to get all the songs – plus the next 12 as they’re released – is via iTunes podcast. Simply go to the podcast section of your iTunes store and search for “Into It Over It.” Subscribe and you’ll have everything that has been posted thus far. Plus, you’ll get each new track as they’re released on Thursday. As previously mentioned, you can visit the website, browse each song page and download them individually. Of course there’s myspace as well, where you can stream a random sampling of tracks.

If you’d like to learn a little more about Into It. Over It. or speak to Evan directly, check out this FAQ page or contact chuck@beartrappr.com. There’s also a couple interviews at Altsounds and the newly-redesigned Sound As Language.

——————————————————-
* NO CONSEQUENCES out June 24

Philadelphia’s Braindead is gearing up for a tour of North America in support of their debut full-length No Consequences. The record is available now in both CD and LP format as a co-release between the band and Burn Bridges.

Ten tracks of up-tempo, incendiary hardcore anthems that pay tribute to progenitors such as Turning Point, Count Me Out and In My Eyes while still injecting more modern elements like melody and lush textures…you can pick up a copy here or from the band on tour.

Of course, if you’re a follower of the “try before you buy” mantra, our friends at Pastepunk will be streaming the album in its entirety for the next two weeks. Click here and you’ll find the “Cut And Paste” media player on the right.

Or if you just like free shit, grab this mp3 for the song An Exercise In Bad Taste.
