PLACES TO HIDE: Tour Announcement + New Song Premier

• June 8 – 29: U.S. Tour in support of debut full-length, ALMOST NOTHING
• Out June 4, 2013 on LP (Irrelevant Recordings) + CD (Out Of This Records)
• Exclusive Stream: Listen to “Ecotone” at Muzik Dizcovery

Places To Hide (Atlanta, GA) has announced a three-week U.S. tour ( June 8 – 29) in support of its debut full-length, Almost Nothing. Details and other information can be viewed below. As always, if you’d like to attend a show or speak with the band, drop me a line here.

Almost Nothing will see an official June 4th release on 12-inch vinyl and digital formats from Places To Hide’s own Irrelevant Recordings. The LP will be limited to a pressing of 250 on black vinyl and will be available from the band on tour, as well as in its webstore. Out Of This Records - a new label from Run Forever‘s Cassie Staub – will also press a CD version of the full-length.

To celebrate today’s announcement, Place To Hide has teamed up with our friends at Muzik Dizcovery to premier a new track, album closer “Ecotone.” Go here to listen to the exclusive stream. The outfit has also made three additional songs available for free download at Bandcamp.

Much like the city in which it resides, Atlanta’s Places To Hide boasts an undeniably soulful swagger. It’s gritty, loud and fun – and maybe just a bit reckless – but there’s also a sweetness and vulnerability to the outfit’s debut full-length, Almost Nothing, that tempers the danger with a slice of Southern charm and wide-eyed naivete … not to mention a heaping load of melody. Although Places To Hide has only been a full band for a year, it has quickly become one of the local DIY punk scene’s most exciting and talked-about up-and-comers. The new LP will only add to that fire, with irresistible songs that often feel like they’re careening out of control, but always steer themselves back to a catchy chorus, a rollicking guitar riff or a foot-stomping beat. Highly recommended for fans of Joyce Manor, Superchunk, Desaparecidos, and Swearin’.

Stay tuned for more news, tour updates and a full-length stream in the next few weeks Be sure to follow Places To Hide on Facebook and Tumblr for daily updates as well.

This split is a perfect example of how diverse punk/hardcore can be. Both Cerce and Stresscase feature female vocalists, yet each take very different approaches. Cerce is as much a riot girl band as they are a hardcore band. With a mix of strong instrumentals and vocals ranging from soft to screaming, they have quickly seperated themselves from the pack. Stresscase on the other hand take their influences from power violence and thrash bands as much and hardcore. Full throttle from the first to the last note!

Direct Effect Joins Tiny Engines

By , 1 May, 2013, 1 Comment

Direct Effect Joins Tiny Engines

• Debut LP, Sunburn, out Summer 2013 on Tiny Engines
• Tour with Ex-Breathers (5/9 – 6/1) announced / Band confirmed for FEST 12
• “Thoughts Of Honey” Tour Video / “Permanent Vacation” streaming on the band’s FEST page
• 2011′s Forget The Rest 7″ available for Free Download and/or Purchase
• RIYL: Paint It Black, Pissed Jeans, Fucked Up, The Jesus Lizard, Metz

——————————————————————————–

Tiny Engines (Dikembe, Restorations, Tigers Jaw) is stoked to welcome Orlando, FL’s Direct Effect to the roster. The band recently finished recording their debut full-length, Sunburn, which is tentatively scheduled for a Summer release on the Carolina-based label. The LP will follow up the band’s 2011 debut 7″, Forget The Rest, on Get Outta Town Records. You can order that record in the Tiny Engines store here.

Direct Effect was recently confirmed for FEST 12 in Gainesville, FL. “Permanent Vacation”, the first track from the band’s upcoming album, is now streaming on the band’s Fest page here. Also, check out the Sunburn Demos, all three songs will appear on the Direct Effect’s new album as well. The band also released a tour video for the album closer, “Thoughts Of Honey”, which can be viewed here. And, last but not least, Direct Effect recently recorded some studio live sessions for Off The Avenue, you can check those three videos out here.

As much as one might enjoy and appreciate the brute force and energy of crossover noise rock and hardcore, it is also a genre defined and owned by part time old dudes who might not relate to their audience anymore. Luckily for us Direct Effect are youthful and reckless enough to make you go nuts, and invite the audience to do the same. The band is loud to say the least, existing somewhere between 80′s hardcore and 90′s Nirvana worship. On their debut full-length, the band has measured out close to a half hour of unadulterated, thought out hardcore punk that will make fans of Paint It Black, Pissed Jeans and Fucked Up stand up and head bang. What was only hinted at on the band’s debut 7″ is now fully formed on Sunburn.

The band will be hitting the road starting next week with Ex-Breathers. Check the tour dates below. Facebook events page here. Tour poster here.

Banquets – New Album Streaming on Punknews

By , 29 April, 2013, 1 Comment

BANQUETS - New Album Now Streaming on Punknews / Available for Pre-Order From BLACK NUMBERS

• Self-Titled LP out 5/7/13 on Black Numbers / Pre-Orders available now
• “Call It A Comeback” Video Premiere on Alternative Press
• Upcoming Fest appearances & record release shows announced

——————————————————————————————————

You can now stream the sophomore Self-Titled LP from Jersey City’s Banquets on Punknews. The album will see an official release date of May 7, 2013 and is available now for Pre-Order viaBlack Numbers. This is the follow-up to the band’s debut LP, Top Button, Bottom Shelf, which came out on Black Numbers in 2011.

The band also recently premiered the video for the album’s first single. “Call It A Comeback” was directed by Kevin Slack (Gaslight Anthem, Cursive, Bouncing Souls) and can be viewed onAlternative Press.

Following up their brilliant debut LP, 2011′s Top Button, Bottom Shelf, Banquets return with a Self-Titled sophomore effort that continues the band’s no filler approach. Much like its predecessor,Self-Titled clocks in at 10 songs under 30 minutes but there is a bit more breathing room here as the band expands and hones their sound. Along with guitarist/vocalist, Dave Frenson and bassist Christ Larsen, the addition of Brian Maguire on drums has been key to the band’s growth. Lead singer, Travis Omilian, is the secret weapon though, hiding behind the band’s ultra tight melodic pop/punk. There is a worn romanticism and a nostalgic charm to Omilian’s lyrics. Combined with the band’s dynamic sense of urgency and uplifting spirit, Omilian’s lyrics give Banquets a depth that is rare to find in the genre these days. Self-Titled truly encompasses the band’s growth into a songwriting tour de force.

The band is confirmed for two Fest appearances in May ahead of their release shows, Death To False Hope Fest in Durham, NC and Pouzza Fest in Montreal. Dates are below.

Upcoming Shows
——————————————————————————–

MAY 11 – Durham, NC @ Death to False Hope Fest
MAY 18 – Montreal @ Pouzza Fest

MAY 26 – Allston, MA @ Obrien’s Pub – Record Release Show w/ The Stereo State, Save Ends, Crimes, Great Lakes USA (acoustic)

Oddczar – New LP Available For Download / Tour Dates

By , 4 March, 2013, 1 Comment

ODDCZAR - New LP Available for Name Your Price Download

• One Word 12″ available now from Bitter Melody / Self Aware
• Stream/download One Word on Bandcamp
• Tour dates announced / Tour Flyer
• RIYL: Touché Amore, Pianos Become the Teeth, Taken, Saetia

——————————————————————————————————

Charlotte, NC hardcore act, Oddczar have put their recently released debut 12″, One Word, up for name-your-price download on Bandcamp for one week only. Oddczar’s brand of hardcore is recommended for fans of Touché Amore, Pianos Become the Teeth, Taken and Saetia. The album is a split release between Bitter Melody Records and Self Aware Records and the LP is limited to 300 copies on random colored vinyl.

There is something to be said about the originality and depth that can spring forth from innocence. Certainly youth can be seen as a blessing or curse when it comes to music. But, for Charlotte, NC hardcore act, Oddczar, there is something remarkably refreshing about their debut full-length, One Word While it is somewhat undefinable, where other bands seem content to follow in the footsteps of their influences, Oddczar feels noticeably different in that regard. You get the feeling Oddczar are trying to sound like no one but themselves and that simplicity (perhaps even naivety) is invigorating for a change.

The youthful passion that drips from One Word is spell-binding. Perhaps it is the heart-firmly-on-sleeve lyrical exorcism that checks your jaded cynicisms at the door and reassures you that drinking from the fountain of youth can in fact be rejuvenating. Or maybe it is the passionate music, echoing the schizophrenic nature of our times. There is a strange melodic underbelly to Oddczar’s madness that breathes you in amidst all the chaos. Simply put, there is no way not to feel these songs. One Word echoes how a personal relationship can mirror the uncertainty and anger of life itself. But there is a cathartic nature to the band as well. Oddczar prove that from the pain and uncertainty of youth can come a deeper clarity. One Word serves as a fitting reminder that age is only a number defined by oneself.

The band will also be playing some shows in the Southeast in support of One Word. Dates are listed below. Check the tour flyer HERE.

BIO

Recorded by Brief Lives guitarist Chris Compton (Memorial, Hold Tight!, Family Cat), Whistleblower‘s two tracks are an angular-yet-melodic blast of DC-inspired punk rock, weaving themselves deftly amidst sinewy rhythms and jagged riffs. The Richmond quartet never loses sight of a solid hook though, and its foundation is built upon infinitely captivating song structures and a propulsive backbone that’s always moving things forward at a snappy pace. Whistleblower is unquestionably a must listen for fans of Jawbox, Quicksand and Bluetip.

Springtime – Spring Break Tour with Brief Lives

SPRINGTIME On Tour with Brief Lives / Debut 7″ Coming Soon

• Spring Break tour dates with Brief Lives
• Debut 7″ coming soon on Tiny Engines
• Stream/download 2012 Demo

——————————————————————————————————

Richmond, VA’s Springtime joined the Tiny Engines (Dikembe, State Lines, Signals Midwest, Run, Forever) roster in January and will hit the road with their friends in Brief Lives for a short Spring Break tour to celebrate. The band will also play several dates with their friends in Old Flings as well as a Gainesville date with labelmates, Dikembe. Tiny Engines will release the band’s official debut on 7″ vinyl in the Spring. You can download the band’s 2012 Demo for free HERE.

Playing D.C.-styled hardcore in the vein of Dag Nasty and early End Of A Year, Richmond, VA’s Springtime brims with energy and an unmistakeable old school flare. Forming in late 2011 and featuring members of Family Cat, Tiger Tail and Cheyenne, Springtime’s self-released demo was released only a few months later in March 2012. The songs showcase a maturity that is striking for such a young, wet-behind-the-ears band. The tension and tenacity of Springtime is palpable as the first chords explode. The passion of early DC emocore from Rites of Spring to Dag Nasty shines through in sharp bouts of energy that emanate from the band’s songs. With short bursts of melodic fury and dueling, angular guitars over gruff but enticing vocals the band never fails to keep your undivided attention at all times. Mixed with the melodic punk/hardcore of scene giants like Leatherface, Texas Is The Reason and Lifetime, Springtime pay fitting tribute to their influences while confidently blazing their own path.

All dates with Brief Lives. Download tour flyer HERE.

The Hotel Year – Tour Dates Announced

By , 22 February, 2013, 1 Comment

THE HOTEL YEAR - On Tour

• Winter Tour Dates announced (2/26 – 3/23)
• Sophomore LP coming Summer 2013 on Tiny Engines
• Stream/download debut LP HERE

——————————————————————————————————

Fresh off the announcement of The Hotel Year signing to Tiny Engines (Dikembe, State Lines, Run, Forever, Signals Midwest), the band is set to embark on a Winter Tour starting February 26th in Easthampton, MA. The band will finish up recording for their sophomore full-length before leaving for tour and Tiny Engines will release the new LP on 12″ vinyl in the Summer. The album will be the long-awaited follow up the band’s 2011 debut, It Never Goes Out, which is available for a name your price download HERE.

Residing somewhere loosely between pop/punk, indie rock and emo, The Hotel Year exude a certain charm and romanticism that exceeds their relatively young age. The band’s quirky style immediately brings to mind the geek rock heart and soul of Piebald and Harvey Danger while recalling the playfulness of The Promise Ring. Reminiscent in spirit with the confrontational poetry of The Weakerthans, The Hotel Year showcase a genuine maturity that pushes the band beyond genre stereotypes and firmly into their own stratosphere.

If you live in an area that The Hotel Year are missing (TX, FL mainly) and want to help the band out, email them HERE.

Apart recently digitally released a brand new 2-song single, Love Is Not Enough, in September. You can get that here. Also, the band is offering just about their entire discography digitally for only $4 here.

Apart is a hardcore band in the vein of bands like Modern Life is War and Life Long Tragedy. The band’s debut LP, Gray Light, is eight songs of emotional hardcore at it’s finest. What separates Apart from the rest of the pack is a strong influence from the more lyrically driven bands of the early 2000′s like American Nightmare, Panic, and Carry On.

BIO
——————————————————————————–

It was surprising to virtually no one – save for Dikembe itself – that Chicago Bowls, in all its anthemic, adrenalized indie-cum-emo / punk greatness, took the underground by storm last year. The ironic, pun-laden ode to weed and arguably (and less ironically) the greatest championship squad in NBA history was a breath of fresh air … playful, charismatic and downright infectious without emitting an ounce of pretension. Four revelatory cuts of undeniable, high energy DIY rock ‘n’ roll, Chicago Bowls cajoled the listener to laugh along with song titles such as “Scottie Spliffen” and “Michael Jordank.” There was no doubt that Dikembe’s playful nature was an integral part of its singular sound, and perhaps one of the biggest reasons why we couldn’t wait to hear what the outfit conjured up next.

Accordingly, it would have been easy for Dikembe to rush its debut full-length, but the band wisely spent the appropriate amount of time recording and mixing the ten amazing songs that would eventually make up highly anticipated Broad Shoulders. And from the first long-awaited note, it’s clear that there’s something truly unique manifesting itself Dikembe’s signature sound – powerhouse rhythms, the acrobatic back-and-forth between the guitars and front man Steven Gray’s confident-yet-completely raw and exposed delivery – is all still present, and it’s imparted with even more vigor and conviction than ever before. However, album highlights such as “I Watch A Lot Of Jackie Chan Movies” and “Not Today, Angel” are thoughtful, nuanced and occasionally even haunting. They help to paint a picture of an evolving band and a record that is not only imaginative and memorable, but one that is fully realized and worthy of all the hype.

Modern Baseball – On Tour / In Support of Sports

Sports LP Available Now On Lame-O Records
• Stream/Download the album / Order the vinyl here
• Winter Dates Announced
RIYL: The Sidekicks, The Front Bottoms, Say Anything, Motion City Soundtrack

——————————————————————————————————

Philadelphia’s Modern Baseball just released their debut LP, Sports, on Lame-O Records. You can stream/download the album or order the vinyl here.

Modern Baseball exhibits a lot of promise and boasts their grasp on the fundamentals of good songwriting while testing the waters by writing a record within this weird, hybrid pop/indie/DIY/quirky genre pioneered by bands like The Front Bottoms and Tigers Jaw. Recommended for fans of Motion City Soundtrack’s lyrics and drunkenly grasping the shoulders of your best friend.Property Of Zack

Modern Baseball is the brainchild of Jacob Ewald and Brendan Lukens, of Frederick and Brunswick, Maryland, respectively. The band began to take real shape in the fall of 2011 when releasing their first material, an EP entitled The Nameless Ranger. Shortly after the band relocated to Philadelphia for school, Ewald to Drexel University while Lukens continued his schooling at Chestnut Hill College for Communications. A split with Marietta entitled Couples Therapy followed in the Spring of 2012 and the band continued to garner high praise within the Philly underground. After touring with Marietta in support of Couples Therapy the band geared up to write and record their first full length record. After sleepless nights and taking full advantage of Drexel University’s free studio, the two, with great help from engineer, friend, and bass player, Ian Farmer finished the recording process. The record, Sports, was just released on the newly formed label, Lame-O Records, run by band manager/friend, Eric Osman.

Modern Baseball is heading out for some Winter dates in late December / early January in support of Sports. The band will be playing alongside a slew of great bands like Dikembe, Waxahatchee, Pity Sex, Pentimento, The Candy Hearts and You Blew It!. You can check out the tour poster here.

Tyler Daniel Bean – On Tour / Debut LP Out Now

TYLER DANIEL BEAN – On Tour / In Support of Longing

Longing LP Available Now On Kat Kat Records
• Stream/Name-Your-Price Download here
• Winter Tour Announced (JAN 02-19)

——————————————————————————————————

Burlington, VT’s Tyler Daniel Bean released his debut LP, Longing, earlier this year on Kat Kat Records. You can name-your-price and download the album here and/or order the vinyl from Kat Kat here.

With unbridled ambition, Tyler Daniel Bean has taken the reigns of his eponymous musical hobbyhorse to race in the heats of heartache in the Oberst-emo arena. Having stitched closure with his recently disbanded screamo band, ghosting., Tyler has gotten a great start straight out of the gate having just released his debut full-length album. Longing is a gritty record that has raised the bar on what it means to be mellifluous balladeer in the acoustic/screamo realm. Despite this being his solo debut album, make no mistake; Tyler Daniel Bean is no novice and certainly no stranger in alt musical circles. To boot, being a dweller of Burlington, Vermont, he is well acquainted with cold and barren landscapes. It is these types of settings that are lyrically portrayed in his seasoned songwriting with sentiments being even more exquisitely rich than the sap of a maple tree with early-stage Jesse Lacey flowing from it.

Bean is heading out on a short Winter Tour in January in support of Longing. The tour is with a full band featuring members of Weak Teeth and Without. The dates include shows with The Hotel Year, Placeholder and Tanner Jones of You Blew It!. You can check out the tour poster here.
