Live Free Or Don’t Tour, the latest vinyl-only release from heavy-riffing, pedal-happy post-whatever trio CITY OF SHIPS, collects a handful of epic-sounding songs recorded over the course of their relatively short career: Side A contains four devastatingly beautiful, feedback-drenched tracks from 2008’s Tour EP while the flip side hosts five thundering-yet-complex barnburners from the Live Free Or Don’t EP. Much like the band’s melding of genres, the LP works well as a cohesive whole while still showcasing growth and a willingness to experiment with angular, math-y structures, sweepingly eerie atmospherics and a massive, crushing wall of sound.
Recently relocated to Richmond, VA via Northwest Florida – and often self-described as “transient” due to their busy touring schedule – City Of Ships manage to embody a lot of unique things all at once without ever completely proscribing to any one particular style of music. It’s this fluidity and technical proficiency, not to mention the sheer weight of their brain-shaking low-end assault and soaring, emotionally-resonant vocal delivery that have people comparing them to bands as diverse as Isis, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Cult of Luna, Hum, Neurosis and Hoover. Whichever waters City Of Ships decide to navigate – turbulent noise rock, intensely cathartic hardcore, sludgy metal or dense, moody shoegaze – their swirling songs pulse with energy and explode with a passion that’s difficult to contain and damn near impossible to ignore.
City Of Ships is Eric Jernigan (guitar, vocals), Andrew Jernigan (bass) and Eric Soelzer (drums). Both the 2008 Tour EP (self-released) and Live Free Or Don’t (Forcefield Records) were recorded by Jeremy Griffith – the former at Glow In The Dark Studios in Atlanta in December of 2007 and the latter at Magnolia in St. Augustine, F.L. in April of 2006. The band also appeared on a split 12-inch (Perpetual Motion Machine) with Souvenir’s Young America in 2008 and will be recording a new full-length in early 2009 as well.
Live Free Or Don’t Tour will be released by Forcefield Records on January 27, 2009. For more info go to www.cityofships.com or www.forcefieldrecords.org
