Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) has finally unleashed their much anticipated full-length debut into eager hands. What It Takes To Move Forward, courtesy of the band’s own Count Your Lucky Stars record label, was meticulously recorded and painstakingly put together over the last two years. Through line-up changes, recording delays and all the usual indie band potholes, Empire Empire has emerged stronger and more assured than ever before. What It Takes To Move Forward is the sound of a band refusing to settle.
With two successful releases under their belts, Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) could have easily written an album that played it safe. Instead, the band indulges their ambitions and provides the soundtrack for What It Takes To Move Forward. Granted Empire Empire is still an indie/emo band at heart but something is noticeably different here; there is a sizable progression heard that simply can not be ignored. After all, when is the last time you heard a banjo on an emo record? Empire Empire’s songwriting has matured and their instrumentation has broadened yet this is still the same band that made you remember what real emotion sounded like. Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) is able to strike the perfect balance between progression and familiarity.
