When your punk rock pedigree includes Token Entry, Grey Area, WARZONE, Lifetime, Kid Dynamite and Paint It Black, there’s a heightened level of expectation that comes with the formation of any new group consisting of members of those bands. That said, past success and critical praise does not guarantee greatness in the future.
Thankfully, Higher Giant deftly avoids the “failed supergroup” tag, never straying too far from its members’ previous endeavors. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Accordingly, the quartet’s second 7-inch release, Al’s Moustache, rips through four ultra-catchy blasts of hardcore-tinged punk, picking up where last year’s driving, energy-packed The First Five left off.
Featuring NYC hardcore fixture Ernie Parada (Token Entry, Grey Area, Black Train Jack) on vocals and guitar, as well as Lifetime / Kid Dynamite / Paint It Black / Good Riddance drummer David Wagenschutz, guitarist Jason Lehrhoff (WARZONE, Grey Area) and Alex Volonino (The Arsons) on bass, Higher Giant is pretty much what you’d expect from the sum of its parts. Parada has always been known for for taking his hardcore foundation – the aggression and cathartic release – and combining it with infectious, galloping shots of melodic punk rock. As with Al’s Moustache, the tasty, uptempo dish is fun and memorable, but rough enough around the edges to remind us that this type of music is best served salty with a pinch of anger and frustration.
Al’s Moustache was recorded by Arik Victor (Kill Your Idols, Crime In Stereo, The Casualties, Good Riddance) at Creep Studios on March 28, 2008. Black Numbers will release the 7-inch on August 11, 2009. The label pressed 1000 copies on three colors (225 red, 275 yellow, 500 orange). Earlier this year, Higher Giant released its debut, The First Five, on Runner Up Records on 7-inch vinyl format.
