If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to reside in a city with a thriving punk rock house – a place where the floor is almost always sticky from the warm beer spilled the night before, where the rules are fast and loose and the sleeping arrangements are less about comfort and more about convenience – then you might appreciate the circumstances surrounding the formation of Canadian five piece piece, Living With Lions, and the recording of their debut EP, Dude Manor.
Originally established as cost-effective housing and subsequent party destination for a revolving cast of East Vancouver punks, “Dude Manor” gradually made the transformation from squatters paradise to Living With Lions’ point of origin, base of operations and band practice space.
Simply stated, we’re talking about five roommates who rightfully assumed that forming a punk rock outfit would be an entertaining, creative way to spend their free time. Little did they know that the handful of fist-pumping, melodic hardcore songs that sprung from those early jam sessions, not to mention the camaraderie, late night antics and back-and-forth battles with angry neighbors, would be the start of something truly special.
Living With Lion’s debut EP commemorates those unforgettable times and that inimitable house, and while Dude Manor was eventually condemned (not before one last epic party, of course), the spirit lives on with the band and these six incredibly catchy, hard-hitting barnburners. This is passionate, anthemic punk rock fueled by grit and determination; it gives nods to its influences – Lifetime, Hot Water Music, A Wilhelm Scream to name a few – while clearly establishing a foundation for the band’s own unique take on on the genre. Undoubtedly, Dude Manor embraces the raucous attitude and communal spirit of its namesake while signaling the beginning of something new and exciting.
Dude Manor was recorded by Daggermouth’s Stu McKillop at The Hive Studios in the fall of 2006. It was originally released on CDEP format in Canada by Black Box Recordings on September 18th, 2007. Adeline Records will be releasing Dude Manor worldwide on 10-inch vinyl and digitally on April 7th, 2009. The label will also release Living With Lion’s 11-song debut LP, Make Your Mark on vinyl, CD and digital format in the summer of 2009.
