The Wonder Years / All Or Nothing – Split 7″ Pre-Order

THE WONDER YEARS / ALL OR NOTHING – Pre-order Distances 7-inch
* Out March 10th on No Sleep Records
——————————————————-

Distances, the latest 7-inch split release between Philadelphia’s The Wonder Years and Birmingham, England’s All Or Nothing, is now available for pre-order from No Sleep Records. The vinyl will see an official release date of March 10, 2009.

Limited to 1000 and pressed on three different color variations (300 white / blue splatter, 300 white / red splatter, 400 clear blue), Distances contains two brand-new songs from each band. All copies of the vinyl also include an MP3 download card which features a bonus third track from All Or Nothing.

Additionally, No Sleep is offering 100 limited-edition package deals for the release. Each one contains all three vinyl colors (wrapped in a special fold-over jacket), an exclusive tee shirt, button set and other goodies. For more info, go here.

Born from the friendship forged and experiences shared on the 2007 Hostels and Brothels Tour in the UK, Distances is truly a transatlantic split between two pop-punk giants. Teeming with undeniable melodies, plenty of shouted choruses and dynamic song structures, this release is heavy on the hooks, but incredibly easy on the ears. Both The Wonder Years and All Or Nothing are currently streaming selected tracks on their respective myspace pages.

LOOK MEXICO – Debuts New Video for “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark, Are You?”
——————————————————-

* from latest EP, GASP ASP – Out now on Tiny Engines / Lujo
* Unreleased Bionic Ear Session track available for free download

——————————————————-

LOOK MEXICO (Tallahassee, F.L.) has unveiled a new video for “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark, Are You?” It’s the first song from the band’s latest EP, GASP ASP.

Remember the pie eating scene in Stand By Me? It’ s sort of like that, minus the vomiting. You can watch the shenanigans here.

Gasp Asp was recently released in 7-inch vinyl format by Tiny Engines while Lujo Records released a digital version in September of 2008.

In other news, Look Mexico stopped by Bionic Ear Recording Studio on their last U.S. tour to record something shiny and new for Indie Rock Review’s Bionic Ear Sessions. You can download a free mp3 for the previously unreleased “Just Like Old Times” here. There’s also a great video of the band recording the song in the studio. Watch it here

Currently, Look Mexico is writing new songs for what will be the full-length follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut This Is Animal Music. The band will be playing a handful of shows in Florida over the next couple months, including the Harvest of Hope Fest in March.

Since La Dispute’s 2004 inception, the band’s urgent, often-ferocious brand of driving hardcore has garnered comparisons to Saetia, At The Drive-In and mewithoutYou while their live show has been known to light a fire under more than a few receptive audiences. However, on the its debut full-length, Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River…, there’s an unmistakably foreboding, almost hypnotic current pulsing through these twelve remarkable songs. It’s a captivating turn as La Dispute has always been more known for their frantic and frenzied brand of aural aggression than for any soul-searching composition or contemplative passage. Somewhere will undoubtedly change that perception.

One Small Step For Landmines – Free Digital EP

ONE SMALL STEP FOR LANDMINES – Free Digital EP Out Now
——————————————————-

* Download If You Could Get Over Me
* Shows with Jim Ward
* Appearing at Invisible Children Benefit

——————————————————-

One Small Step For Landmines (Tallahassee, F.L.) is now offering its new acoustic EP, If You Could Get Over Me, for free digital download. Snag your copy here.

The download includes six brand-new songs, plus an eight-page booklet with art and design by the incomparable Jerrod Landon Porter. JLP also redesigned the band’s myspace page…which normally I wouldn’t mention (because myspace sucks it) but it’s worth checking out for the animated graphic of Kevin riding his bike around the city.

In other news (and I realize this affects approximately two people on my mailing list), One Small Step For Landmines is playing five shows in Australia with Jim Ward (Sleepercar / Sparta) beginning tomorrow. For everyone else – or at least those of you on the West Coast – the band will also be playing the Invisible Children Benefit Concert in Hollywood, C.A. on December 19th. The show will feature acoustic performances from Dustin Kensrue (Thrice), Chris Conley (Saves The Day), Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Jim Ward.

Shows

DEC 12 – Bulli, Australia @ Heritage w/ Jim Ward
DEC 13 – Brisbane, Australia @ Thriller w/ Jim Ward
DEC 19 – Hollywood, CA @ The Troubadour / Invisible Children Benefit

One Small Step For Landmines released the digital single Good Men Die Young And I’m Not Feeling Well in July of this year while its debut Self-titled full-length came out in September of 07. The band is currently writing and recording songs for a new long-player due out in 2009.

Polar Bear Club – More Touring

POLAR BEAR CLUB – Touring the World (sort of)
——————————————————-

* U.S. Shows with Fireworks begin on Friday (Dec 05 – 16)
* Canadian dates with Cancer Bats (Dec 17 – 21)
* UK / European tour with The Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner (Feb 02 – Mar 04)

——————————————————-

No rest for New York’s Polar Bear Club as they continue with a heavy touring schedule in support of their Red Leader debut, Sometimes Things Just Disappear (released 03/11/08).

Beginning on Friday, the boys will leave for nearly two weeks of shows in the U.S. with Fireworks, immediately followed by five days in Canada with Cancer Bats. Then in February, the band will travel overseas for a month of shows in the UK and Europe with The Gaslight Anthem and Frank Turner.

While it’s not exactly a “continuous” world tour, 14 countries in the span of three months counts for something, right? Consider that in that same time period, I will have traveled to exactly one state. Maybe two if I decide to drive ten minutes due south.

If you’d like to attend any of these shows or speak with Polar Bear Club, drop me a line here.

THE COLOR WHEELS – Fall Shows
——————————————————-

* Week-long tour of Northeast begins today (Nov 07 – 15)
* In support of Self-Titled debut (Viper Bite Records)

——————————————————-

The pride of Poughkeepsie, THE COLOR WHEELS, will be hitting the road today for a short tour across the Northeast in support of their Self-Titled debut full-length on Viper Bite Records.

Made up of husband and wife duo of Jon and Psalm Sebastian, the band has put together a batch of cunningly addictive songs about pirate ships, playing house and pitching tents. Don’t be fooled though – therein lies the undeniable heart and contagious innocence of The Color Wheels. Still, behind the infectious guitars and sparkling melodies there are bursts of perfectly crafted power pop with a surprising attention to detail. If you rocked out to The Promise Ring’s Very Emergency back in the day, The Color Wheels Self-Titled debut is a must have.

Look Mexico – Pre-order New 7-inch

LOOK MEXICOGASP ASP vinyl now available for pre-order!
——————————————————-

* Pre-order 7-inch now from new label Tiny Engines (cause we’ll be out of business in six months)
* Vinyl available in three colors – ships on November 25th
* Digital version from Lujo Records available now

——————————————————-

GASP ASP, the newest 7-inch from Tallahassee, Florida’s LOOK MEXICO, is available now for pre-order from fledgling, destined-to-fail label, Tiny Engines.

Go here to grab a copy of this tasty slab of plastic. Orders will ship on November 25th and will include an mp3 download code for the songs.

Undoubtedly Look Mexico’s best work to date, Gasp Asp builds on the foundation of their brief-but-impressive catalog – the dynamic instrumental interplay, undeniably catchy melodies and a knack for keeping things unpredictable. Still, these three tracks inject a welcomed sense of maturity and craftsmanship, and Look Mexico sound more assured of their songwriting abilities than ever before. The band has truly discovered its own unique voice in indie rock.

On the other hand, Tiny Engines hasn’t done a single noteworthy thing, save for this 7-inch…which isn’t even out yet. Having said that, we’re fairly confident that we put together a really sweet first release. There are 1000 copies of the vinyl being pressed in three colors: light blue (200), white (200) and green (600). We also printed jackets (art by the band’s Josh Mikel / layout by JLP) featuring matte-finish and two foil-stamping variations. Of course, it’s easy to put together an awesome package when you’re working around three amazing songs.

Listen to “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark, Are You?” (mp3)

Speaking of mp3s, in September Lujo Records released a four-song digital EP version of Gasp Asp. If vinyl doesn’t get you all hot and bothered, the EP is available from iTunes now. And don’t forget to check out other Look Mexico albums from Lujo, including The Crucial Collection and their awesome debut full-length, This Is Animal Music

It’s also worthwhile to note that Suburban Home is taking pre-orders for a split 7-inch between Look Mexico and pals Fake Problems. The vinyl is the first volume in Suburban Home / Vinyl Collective’s Under The Influence Series.

Lanterns – On Tour

LANTERNS – Fall Shows
——————————————————-

* West Coast tour begins tomorrow (Nov 06 – 22)
* Apocalypse Youth out now

——————————————————-

LANTERNS rise triumphantly from the hollowed indie rock grounds of San Diego with Apocalypse Youth, a fiery collection of noisy pop songs. Beginning tomorrow, the band will take their show on the road for a quick West Coast swing in support of the new five-song EP.

As the opening chords of distortion ring from Apocalypse Youth and the drums build to a sharp climax, there is a genuine feeling of excitement. The four young men of Lanterns do nothing to quell that anticipation across the EP’s raging sound. The band washes its songs in waves of glorious feedback, yet buried right beneath the surface lay shards of penetrating melody. With anthemic guitars and powerful, thought-provoking lyrics, Lanterns is a beacon of hope in this crowded musical landscape. Imagine if you will And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead without all the pretension weighing them down.

Empire! Empire! – October / November Shows

EMPIRE! EMPIRE! (I WAS A LONELY ESTATE) – October / November shows
——————————————————-

* Touring East Coast (Oct 23 – Nov 07) in supprt of Year Of The Rabbit 7-inch
* Vinyl available from Count Your Lucky Stars, strictly no capital letters

——————————————————-

Michigan’s EMPIRE! EMPIRE! (I WAS A LONELY ESTATE) is currently touring the East Coast in support of its latest release, the well-received 7-inch, Year Of The Rabbit.

The record was co-released by the band’s own Count Your Lucky Stars label and UK distro strictly no capital letters. You can pick up a copy of the 7-inch from either one.

The two songs on Year Of The Rabbit speak to the maturation of Empire! Empire! since its debut EP, When The Sea Became A Giant. In that time, the four piece has garnered comparisons to classic bands such as Mineral, Appleseed Cast and American Football. When Empire! Empire! returns home from its road adventures, the band will head directly to the studio to put the finishing touches on its debut LP, which should see an early 2009 release.

Beartrap Bands at The Fest 7

BEARTRAP BANDS – Touring, Festing!
——————————————————-

* 16 Beartrap-affiliated bands playing The Fest 7 in Gainesville, FL (Oct 31 – Nov 02)
* Additional tour dates for October, November

——————————————————-

It’s that time of year again, when throngs of bearded, bespectacled, boozed-up and and boisterous punk rock enthusiasts descend upon the charming college town of Gainesville, Florida for a weekend of relative insanity simply known as The Fest.

Likewise, hundreds of hard-working DIY bands plan tours around these three raucous days, hoping to win over new fans, see some amazing performances from their peers and in general, enjoy the camaraderie and community of the weekend’s events.

On that note, there are 16 bands on the Beartrap roster that will be performing this year: Annabel, Benard, Broadway Calls, Building The State, Cheap Girls, City Of Ships, Jena Berlin, Look Mexico, The Measure [SA], Nakatomi Plaza, One Win Choice, O Pioneers!!!, Polar Bear Club, Slingshot Dakota, Static Radio NJ and Worn In Red.

The Fest specifics for each band are listed below, including additional dates for those touring the country around that time as well. Obviously, it’s a ton of information; I certainly don’t expect anyone to post it all. Just figured that some of these bands might be passing through your town and you might be interested in attending. Also, I’m sure that a few of you will be at The Fest. If you get an opportunity, swing by, say hi and catch some really amazing sets.

Changing topics slightly, many of these Beartrap-affiliated bands appear on the Pastepunk 10th Anniversary MP3 Compilation. It’s totally free and includes previously unreleased songs, rare and live material, demo recordings for upcoming releases and several exclusive tracks recorded specifically for the comp. With 25 songs in total, it will be posted until November 16th. For more information, go here, or directly download a zip file here.

Pastepunk.com – 10th Anniversary / Free MP3 Compilation

PASTEPUNK.COM – Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary Today!
——————————————————-

* Commemorates occasion with coffee mugs and a Free MP3 Compilation from the BEARTRAP PR roster!
* 25 new, unreleased and rare songs from De La Hoya, Jena Berlin, Look Mexico, Pomegranates, Scream Hello, Nakatomi Plaza, Broadway Calls, Jumpercable, La Dispute, more!

——————————————————-

When I started Pastepunk during my first year of college, the plan was to write reviews of local shows and CDs that I had owned. There were no other goals and no big ambitions. The word “blog” had yet to be coined and the MP3 will still an innocent technological breakthrough. I never thought that my hobby would become such a substantial part of my life for the next 10 years. In that time period, we have seen the internet turn the independent music world upside down, and have been there to document the fruits and spoils along the way.Jordan Baker, founder of Pastepunk.com

In punk rock, stating that you’ve been around for a decade is essentially admitting that you’re an ancient vessel amidst a sea of doe-eyed, baby-faced, sometimes-talented (but often not) newbies who have barely tested the chilly DIY waters before sailing for warmer shores. Not to say that crusty old people rule, but there are certainly a handful that possess a nugget or two of wisdom and should be looked upon with reverence and admiration.

Such is the case with well-respected, often-imitated-but-never-duplicated webzine PASTEPUNK.COM.

Ten years ago to the day, Jordan Baker created the site as an outlet against boredom and vapidity of dorm room life. And while diligently sticking it out for so long is impressive, all this talk about who has the most notches on their studded punk rock belt or more indie cred means nothing unless you’re contributing something relevant and interesting…and more importantly, doing it with passion and unshakable dedication. Jordan was one of the first people with whom I ever worked when I entered the fray almost nine years ago; I can state without hesitation that he and Pastepunk measure up to those qualifications.

With an archive of more than 10,000 news posts, 3000 album reviews and 300 interviews from bands such as Bad Religion, Rise Against, Thrice, Dropkick Murphys, H20, Less Than Jake, Bane, Set Your Goals, Strike Anywhere, Modern Life Is War, Against Me!, Crime In Stereo, Paint It Black, Thursday and AFI, Pastepunk’s quality of content ranks up there with the best. What’s more is that Jordan and his staff not only entertain on a daily basis, they do so with thought-provoking commentary and discerning tastes. In the words of the site’s creator:

As a teen, I spent countless hours reading MRR, Punk Planet and Flipside, obsessing over music reviews and searching for a consistent voice of recommendation. I have tried to be that source with Pastepunk, relishing the role of being a filter in a world where the number of bands is simply overwhelming. It hasn’t always been easy, but the relentless, addictive search to discover the next great hardcore, punk, metal or indie band is a desire that runs through my bones. I’ve always said that I’ll keep doing Pastepunk until it isn’t fun anymore and it means the world to me that we’re still here.

To mark the occasion, Jordan and I have gathered 25 songs from BEARTRAP bands, creating the Pastepunk 10th Anniversary MP3 Compilation. It includes a number of previously unreleased songs, rare and live material, demo recordings for upcoming releases and several exclusive tracks recorded specifically for the comp. All 25 MP3s are completely free, but only available for the next month – until November 16th. For more information, go here, or directly download a zip file (including cover art and detailed information about every song) here.

And by all means, feel free to pass around the link or post it on your website!

Pastepunk is no stranger to compilations, releasing Broken Lamps and Hardcore Memories Volume 1 and Volume 2 in 2002 and 2004 respectively, the latter of which was exclusively distributed by Suburban Home Records. The company, through its Vinyl Collective store, is helping out once again, handling order fulfillment for the limited edition Pastepunk Coffee Mugs. There are only 144 of these bad boys available, so grab yours here!

In conclusion, I’d like to to thank Pastepunk.com for 10 very memorable years and for giving all the Beartrap bands a chance to be part of this anniversary commemoration.

Pastepunk would also like to add, “thanks to all of the bands, record labels and management and PR firms that keep us well-stocked with new music and information, and our advertising partners as well. Without your support, we would probably have a lot more photos of cute babies chewing on stuffed animals.”

Originally released as a CDEP by Amnot Records in May of 2007, Faces In The Architecture’s post-rock reverb, dynamic time signatures and swelling atmospherics owes much to bands like Explosions In The Sky, but the warm textures, experimentation and earnest vocals tend to evoke indie rock heroes such as Built To Spill and The Appleseed Cast. Building The State is both dynamic and moving while simultaneously weaving a subtle backdrop of mesmerizing sound. You can stream a few tracks on the band’s myspace page.

The trio is touring in support of their well-received debut full-length, Find Me A Drink Home, which was released digitally by donation-based label Quote Unquote Records on July 11th, 2008. You can still download all eleven songs for free here…no strings attached! Of course, donations are encouraged; help the bands and label continue to record and release great music!

Produced by Rick Johnson of Mustard Plug and the aforementioned Bomb the Music Industry!, Find Me A Drink Home was released in CD format by Bermuda Mohawk Productions in April while Los Diaper Records released the vinyl version in May. Both are still available from the labels…and if you ever pine for a totally awesome throwback to 90′s melodic guitar rock (think Smoking Popes meets Dinosaur Jr.) you should definitely pick this up in one of its many available incarnations.

Listen to “Kind of On Purpose” and “No One To Blame” (Free MP3s).

ONE WIN CHOICE – New Vinyl / Upcoming Tours
——————————————————-

* New 7-inch on Jump Start
* Nine-day tour with American Armada begins today
* Three-week tour in Oct / Nov with Antillectual (Oct 17 – Nov 09)

ONE WIN CHOICE (Toms River, N.J.) has just announced that their upcoming three-song 7-inch will be released by Jump Start Records in early 2009. The band should have copies in late October though, just in time for their show at The Fest in Gainesville, F.L.

A total of five songs were recorded in September by Mike Rummel at Below Sea Level. Rummel has worked with The Bouncing Souls, Spanish Bombs, Pitch Black Blonde and Gimme Drugs. Three of the tracks will appear on the 7-inch while the remaining two will be available exclusively as digital downloads. Of course, anyone who purchases the vinyl will receive mp3s for all five songs.

The band has also planned a fair share of touring for the next two months, beginning today with a nine-day trip through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana with American Armada.

In October and November, One Win Choice will be hitting the road for three weeks with label mates Antillectual. Jump Start will be releasing the U.S. vinyl version of the Belgium band’s latest full-length, Testimony, on October 21st. More on those dates soon, but as previously mentioned, both bands have been confirmed for The Fest.

If you’d like to attend one of these shows or speak with One Win Choice, drop me a line here.

Into It. Over It. – Year-Long Recording Project Completed

INTO IT. OVER IT. – 52 Songs In 52 Weeks
- All Available For Free Download!
——————————————————-

* Final song in Evan Weiss’ 52-week recording project posted today
* For a limited time download free MP3s for all 52 tracks
* Songs being remixed / remastered for re-release on iTunes

——————————————————-

Over the course of the past year, INTO IT. OVER IT., the alias and mouthpiece for Philadelphia native Evan Weiss (The Progress / Up Up Down Down), has written and recorded exactly one new song every week for the past 52 weeks.

Today, the project – or at least the current phase of it – comes to an end as the final song has been posted. Check it out here.

And while you’re at it, why don’t you grab the previous 51 offerings as well? They’re all available in MP3 format and will remain on the site as free downloads for the next two weeks. Everything is currently being remixed and remastered by Steve Poponi (Up Up Down Down) and will be re-released via iTunes in October. Weiss is also planning on an eventual Into It. Over It. CD / Vinyl release. If you’re interested in being a part of that, drop him an email.

Over It. Into It. was conceived by Evan Weiss as a means to break free from a musical rut, as well as an autobiographical outlet to document that quickly passing thing we call “life.” The first song was posted on his 23rd birthday (09/27/07) and for each of the following 51 weeks Weiss tackled the ambitious task of writing and recording one new song for the span of a year.

52 weeks = 52 songs: a stat even more impressive considering that nothing was composed in advance, as well as the time constraints involved in such an undertaking. Of course, none of that would matter if the music didn’t hold up. No worries there as there are some really amazing indie rock songs on full display, ranging from tender to tough, sweet to stinging.

Most of the instruments were played by Weiss and the majority of songs were recorded at Gradwell House by Steve Poponi. The last few weeks of music was recorded on the road, however, as Weiss has become the full-time touring bassist for Equal Vision band, Damiera

While this year-long Into It. Over It. project has come to an end, Weiss has no plans on retiring the band. He’ll continue to tour with Damiera and soon he’ll begin a new Into It. Over It. adventure. He’s still not sure what exactly, but check the website in another week; he’ll be posting a wrap up – thoughts and reflections – on the experience, as well as speculation on the future of the band.
