“Written and produced by Summer People.”
That’s nearly all the liner note information on Good Problems as we’re going to get from this enigmatic New York eight-piece. Facebook provides no mention of individual members, save for some fanciful, obviously made-up pseudonyms that appear to be lifted directly from an obscure role-playing murder mystery fan site: Captain “Mal” D. Meirre, Countess Natalia Irina Forilska, Wellington C. Waterloo, Archibald Bemmington Frath and Desiree Flambeau, to name a few.
Summer People’s myspace page is a bit more accommodating, but avoids surnames altogether … and simply skips over any instrumental contributions. Yes, Graham, Alex, Jade, Steve, Pete, Brandon, Justin1 and Justin2 played some part on this the band’s debut full-length, but if you’re looking for something more specific, you’re out of luck.
What little we do know can be gathered in tiny shards from various sources on the Internet: The virtually uncredited members of the octet previously spent time in bands such as Fire When Ready, Mysterious Mysteries and the Trip Wilsons, and they apparently hail from various locals in the northern region of New York State. On the music side, Good Problems was recorded completely live – no overdubs, pro-tools or studio trickery – so what you hear is what Summer People truly sound like. At least that explains why you would need eight people in your band.
We also know that Summer People is content to use the word “collective” when describing its situation, which signifies a certain level of cooperation and equality. It tells us that the band is more than happy to let the music on Good Problems speak for itself, which it most certainly does … with confidence, aplomb and a willingness to explore a seemingly endless number of captivating soundscapes.
