HEAVIER THAN AIR FLYING MACHINES – Debut Full-Length SIAM Out Tomorrow (Friction Records – 09/17/11)
——————————————————————————–

Record release show tomorrow with Bars of Gold, Ghost Heart
• Download “Amphibian Debt March” (free mp3)
• Watch live videos from Halfway House Sessions
• Music video for Follicle Gang (Green)

——————————————————————————–

Michigan trio HEAVIER THAN AIR FLYING MACHINES will celebrate tomorrow’s release of its Friction Records-issued debut-full length, SIAM, with a show in its home town of Grand Rapids. Joining the band will be label mates and Beartrap alumni Bars of Gold and Ghost Heart.

Recorded by Rick Johnson (Cheap Girls, Bomb The Music Industry) at Cold War Studios, Siam will be available on CD and digital formats from Friction, or if you’re near Grand Rapids, swing by the show and pick up a copy directly from the band.

Siam is an often dizzying, occasionally dance-inducing and always-fun blast of 14 razor-sharp post punk tunes. Jagged guitars dart between fuzzed-out bass riffs and twisting, tumbling rhythms while front man Jaymes Pyne barks out abstract lyrical passages that cut through the palpable low-end distortion. Heavier Than Air Flying Machines’ discordant, propulsive take on indie rock may not make it the prettiest band in the room, but it sure does make it the most exciting and memorable. Recommended for fans of Death From Above 1979, Blood Brothers and At The Drive-In.

- The first time I saw these guys perform my heart sweat rock, my spine grew hair and my mind exploded. Siam is a delicious buffet of buzzed-out coarse synchronicity … the best production my ears have heard to date this year.Recoil

In related news, the band recently stopped by The Stone House in Grand Rapids to perform three songs from Siam for the Halfway House Sessions. Be sure to swing by the Halfway House music blog to watch terrific live videos for “Folio Verso,” “Malleable (In So Far)” and “Unmanageable Infrastructure (or the Interstellar Nanobacterium Parasitic Infection).”

Finally, you can check out yet another new track from Siam in the form of this official video for Follicle Gang (Green).

GHOST HEARTThe Tunnel LP / CD Out Tomorrow (01/29/11)
——————————————————————————–

* Debut full-length available now from Friction Records
* Watch videos from Halfway House Sessions
* Download No Canticle (free mp3)

——————————————————————————–

Tomorrow (01/29/11), Grand Rapids, Michigan quartet Ghost Heart will see the release of its stunning debut full-length, The Tunnel, via Friction Records (Bars Of Gold, Bear Versus Shark, La Dispute, Victor! Fix The Sun).

Available on both CD and 12″ vinyl (clear + pink / amber), The Tunnel features accessible yet expansive rock songs that synthesize electronica, American folk, samples, tribal percussion, shoegaze guitar sounds and layered vocals to produce an effect that is at once joyously communal and deeply personal. Ghost Heart’s sound has been described by the Detroit Metro Times as “a little of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend, only with more heart.” Instantly gratifying in some moments, challenging in others, The Tunnel is a unique listening experience.

To order a copy from Friction, go here. And if you’re in the Grand Rapids area tomorrow night, you can also grab one at Ghost Heart’s record release show at Founders.

In related news, the band recently teamed up with the Halfway House music blog to film three live songs, including two from The Tunnel as well as a brand new track titled “Sick Black Lung.” All three videos from the Halfway House Sessions can be viewed here.

Finally, the song “No Canticle” from the album is available as a free mp3 download here. Additional Ghost Heart media can be found here.

- As each song ended it left me wanting more, thankfully abated by the next song’s arrival, and that first listen was something special.Listen Before You Buy
- A different spin on indie pop … strikes a nice balance of psychedelia and vocal hooks that’ll make you want to chant along with them.Tympanogram
- My first headphone album of 2011 … a unique record that no music-geek-connect-the-influence-dots is going to sum up.The Rapidian
- Worthy of checking out … Ghost Heart is unique and is ready to show the scene how to do it right.Oh So Fresh!

Beartrap Bands @ FEST 9

BEARTRAP PR Bands Are FEST-ing!
——————————————————————————————————

• Catch our bands as they tour to FEST 9 in Gainesville, FL (Oct 29 – 31)
• Real question remains, “How many soused, bearded punks can one city hold?”

——————————————————————————————————

It’s that time of year again, where what feels like half the Beartrap Roster asks Will and I, “Can you send out a press release regarding our tour to the FEST?”

So instead of saying “yes” 18 separate times, we decided to compose one all-encompassing FEST 9 press release. It not only highlights when and where our bands are playing during the upcoming Halloween weekend, but all the shows surrounding these three debauched days in Gainesville, FL as well. It’s basically just a friendly heads up for anyone attending the No Idea-sponsored festival or living in towns through which the bands are touring.

Check out the relevant information below for these bands: After The Fall, Annabel, Banquets, Bars Of Gold, Billy Wallace, Campaign, Carpenter, Charles The Osprey, Franz Nicolay, Go Rydell, Grown Ups, imadethismistake, Junior Battles, One Win Choice, Pianos Become The Teeth, PJ Bond, Static Radio NJ and The Great Explainer.

If you’d like to speak with any of the bands or have any guest list requests, drop me a line here.

On a semi-related note, a handful of these outfits (Annabel, Banquets, Campaign, Junior Battles, One Win Choice, and PJ Bond) have contributed previously unreleased and rare material, demos and exclusive tracks for the the Pastepunk 12th Anniversary MP3 Compilation. Featuring 17 songs from the Beartrap PR roster, the comp is available for free download for the next month. Grab it here.

Bars Of Gold – LP Repress / Now On CD

By , 12 October, 2010, No Comment

BARS OF GOLD – 12″ Repress / CD Out Now
——————————————————————————–

* Of Gold second pressing out today (10/12) from Friction Records
* CD version of full-length now available as well

——————————————————————————–

Nothing gold can stay … unless of course you’re Bars Of Gold. In that case, your amazing new record gets a second pressing and a shiny new CD treatment, to boot. Hoorray for being awesome!

Of Gold, the debut LP from ex-members of Michigan legends Bear Vs Shark and instrumental noise outfit Wildcatting, gets a welcome repress and release from Friction Records today, October 12th.

Originally issued in late August and limited to 500 12-inches on translucent orange and translucent green vinyl, the second pressing of 1000 is evenly split between four colors: white, translucent light blue, translucent dark green and translucent purple.

Additionally, Of Gold is now available on compact disc. To pick up a copy of whichever format tickles your fancy (including digital) go here.

As the 50th release for Friction Records, Of Gold finds the Detroit quintet exploring wonderfully uncharted territories and embracing elements of soul, garage rock and Americana. Of course, the influence of vocalist Marc Paffi and drummer Brandon Moss’ former outfit Bear Vs Shark can be felt throughout these eight amazing tracks. Simultaneously reckless and creative, Bars Of Gold wraps everything in ragged, pop-tinged bursts of sonic goodness. You won’t just hear these songs in your head – you’ll feel them in the pit of your stomach as the chaotic rumble gives way to a creaky banjo or whirling synths. These are gritty rock anthems for adults: a welcome, rollicking respite from juvenile themes and uninspired songwriting.

Currently Bars Of Gold is streaming three songs from the album on its myspace page, including “The Hustle,” which you can also download here (free mp3).

——————————————————————————–

Of Gold, the debut full-length from Bars Of Gold, is now available for pre-order. The 12″ LP marks the 50th release for Friction Records and will see an official street date of August 24th from the venerable Michigan label.

If you’re in or near the Grand Rapids, MI area, there will be a release show on September 11th. For more info go here.

Featuring former Bear Vs Shark front man Marc Paffi, as well as original BvS drummer Brandon Moss and members of instrumental noise outfit Wildcatting, Bars Of Gold’s overall sound doesn’t fall far from its punk roots. Still, the outfit explores wonderfully uncharted territories, embracing elements of soul, garage rock and Americana.

Currently the band is streaming three brand new songs from the album on its myspace page, including “The Hustle,” which you can also download at the link below.

Listen to “The Hustle” (free mp3)

Undoubtedly one of 2010′s most anticipated releases, Of Gold is limited to a pressing of 500 on translucent orange and translucent green vinyl. It features artwork by Paffi and each copy will come with an mp3 download code for all the songs.

Bars Of Gold embodies both reckless abandon and creative inspiration, and it wraps it all in bouncy, pop-tinged bursts of sonic goodness. Don’t miss out on this one, folks.

Friction To Release Bars Of Gold LP

By , 25 June, 2010, No Comment

FRICTION To Release Debut LP from BARS OF GOLD
——————————————————————————–

* Of Gold 12″ / Digital out August 24, 2010
* Featuring members of Bear Vs Shark, Wildcatting
* 1st single, “The Hustle,” available on iTunes
* 3 new songs streaming on myspace

——————————————————————————–

Friction Records is pleased to announce that on August 24th, 2010, it will release Of Gold, the debut 12″ from Bars Of Gold.

Featuring former Bear Vs Shark front man Marc Paffi, as well as original BvS drummer Brandon Moss and members of instrumental noise outfit Wildcatting, Bars Of Gold’s overall sound doesn’t fall far from its punk roots. Still, the Michigan five piece manages to branch out into wonderfully uncharted territories, embracing elements of pulsing soul, dirty garage rock and dusty americana.

Regarding a recent Bars Of Gold performance, Detroit’s Metro Times proclaimed, “If Fugazi had David Yow as a front man, but played like they lived off a steady diet of funk and MC5 records they’d sound a lot like this. Wow.”

That’s not a statement to be taken lightly, but then again, neither is Of Gold, which is all at once explosive, contemplative, unpredictable, smooth-yet-caustic and, perhaps just as importantly, downright fun. Limited to a pressing of 500 on opaque orange and translucent green vinyl, this brilliant 12″ features artwork by Paffi and will come with a free download code for all the songs. Pre-orders are scheduled to start at the beginning of August. More details forthcoming, but for now you can grab the album’s first single, “The Hustle,” from iTunes.

The band is currently streaming “The Hustle” and two other new songs on its myspace page as well.

Undoubtedly one of 2010′s most anticipated releases, Of Gold is reckless abandon and creative inspiration wrapped in bouncy, pop-tinged bursts of sonic goodness. It’s fist pumping energy tossed against hip-shaking grooves, tempered by warmly rustic passages and wide open spaces. You won’t just hear these songs in your head – you’ll feel them in the pit of your stomach as the chaotic rumble gives way to a creaky banjo or whirling synths. These are gritty rock anthems for adults; a welcome, rollicking respite from juvenile themes and uninspired songwriting. Don’t miss out on this one, folks.
