Over the last year, South Jersey’s It’s a King Thing has matured into an indie power pop behemoth and now their latest album Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. is coming to vinyl, in the most awkward, fun, embarrassing way possible.
Earlier this week, the band, led by former fat kid Brian Mietz and featuring former members of the criminally underrated Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, launched the coolest Kickstarter project we’ve seen to date.
Since Kickstarter’s launch over a year ago, a bunch of bands have been using the online pledge system to fund their releases. It’s a King Thing has put their own spin on it and the bundles they’re offering are downright ridiculous. They have the usual merch bundle, private shows and custom songs for sale but they’re also throwing prank calls, homemade puppets and a trip to the Maury Povich show into the mix.
“Most music bundles we’ve seen on Kickstarter are too much money and are kinda boring. We thought it’d be more fun to hang out with the people that helped us fund our record pressing and have them scare the shit out of Brian than autograph their record. We’re not Triple H. We don’t think anyone wants our autograph.”
For $25, the band is offering Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. on vinyl and a 60-minute bonus CD called Stuffalo stuffalo Stuffalo stuffalo stuffalo stuffalo Stuffalo stuffalo which includes demos, covers, unreleased songs and alternate recordings. Also included in the $25 bundle is a sticker of a hot dog holding hands with a hamburger and an autographed 8×10 glossy of singer Brian Mietz’s 6th grade, fat laser, class photo. For $10 more, you get all of the previously listed items and the band will prank call one of your ex-boyfriends or girlfriends and send you an mp3 of the conversation. Better than an autograph.
Some of the more expensive bundles include private, write-your-own-set list shows, taking over guitar, singing and drumming duties for a song at the next show and dinner with Brian’s parents, served by Brian’s cousin Stephen who appears in the band’s Kickstarter promo video. Our favorite bundle is the “You Are Not the Father Bundle” which includes a trip to Connecticut to see a taping of the Maury Povich show with the band.
Since last February, Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. has been hosted on the band’s website as a free download. Pop Matters named it one of the “Best Free Albums of 2010”. Fans of the first two Weezer albums, The Lemonheads, Nada Surf and Guided By Voices will find this hook-filled gem enjoyable.
