SWTHRT – Announce Tour / New Video
——————————————————————————————————

* Short Summer Tour (8/9 – 8/16)
* New video for “No Holiday”
* Compact Disc available for Free Download
* Sample “I Am In Misery” on RCRD LBL

——————————————————————————————————

SWTHRT (Southport, NC) are heading out for a short tour in support of the band’s debut album, Compact Disc. The album can be downloaded for free on SWTHRT’s Bandcamp. RCRD LBL calls it a “raw, DIY take on new wave”.

The band also shot their first video recently. With an expansive budget of nearly $9, the band put together a humorous video for “No Holiday” which can be viewed here. Additionally, you can sample “I Am In Misery” on RCRD LBL.

Rising from the indie/punk of his full-time band, Museum Mouth, Karl Kuehn creates something a bit different with SWTHRT. What started out as a senior graduation project for keyboardist Becca High, turned into a real band after only a few days of writing/recording between the two friends. With that, the new wave/shoegaze pop of SWTHRT was officially born. Echoing influences like New Order, The Cure and late period Joy Division, SWTHRT carries on the DIY/punk aesthetic of Museum Mouth while pushing the new wave tendencies to the foreground.

Recorded in the mountains of North Carolina, Compact Disc simmers with youthful frustration. There is a real dichotomy with Kuehn’s deep vocals resonating over the instantly affecting guitar and keyboard driven hooks of the band. The airy instrumental swells carry you far away while the duo’s restless lyrical stylings slowly bring you back down to earth. With both Kuehn and High in transitional phases of their lives, Compact Disc serves as a cathartic project for them both. It also serves as quite the magical beginning for SWTHRT.

SWTHRT is heading out for select dates in support of Compact Disc. As always, if you’d like to attend a show or speak with the band, please drop me a line here.

The Haunted Continents – New Video / CD Release

THE HAUNTED CONTINENTS – Premiers New Video For “2nd Avenue Blues
——————————————————————————————————

* Debut full-length The Loudest Year out January 25, 2011
* Original Xmas Song recently featured on Either / Or mp3 compilation

——————————————————————————————————

Brooklyn-based The Haunted Continents recently premiered a new video for “2nd Avenue Blues,” the first song from the duo’s 2011 debut full-length, The Loudest Year. To check this sweet clip – which features exploding amps, some sort of sloppy hamburger BBQ, skateboarding calamities and even more exploding amps – go here.

Slated to be released on January 25th by the band’s own Forest Park Recordings, The Loudest Year is thirty-one minutes of fuzzed-out vintage rock-n-roll goodness. Call it ’50s bop and soul mixed with ’90s alternative … kind of like Buddy Holly playing Weezer tunes. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, these songs are often sweet, frequently boisterous and always teeming with an endless supply of catchy melodies and raucous hooks. The Haunted Continents has perfected the art of writing stripped-down, corny breakup songs that bounce in rhythm with the soul of heart-broken lovers and nerdy fan boys throughout the land.

To grab a copy of the album (CD or Digital), head on over to the outfit’s Bandcamp page where you can stream all the songs from the record as well.

In related news, The Haunted Continents recently wrote an original Christmas tune entitled “Long Lonely Year.” The song was featured on Either / Or Records‘s latest mp3 compilation, Have Yourself And Either / Or Christmas, which also includes offerings from Run, Forever, Koji, Brandon Setta and Daylight’s Jacob Clarke. To download the comp for a modest five bucks, go here.

JUNIOR BATTLES – Premiers New Video for “BASEMENTS
——————————————————————————–

* Band discovers ratio of Copyright Infringement to Money Spent directly proportional to Overall Entertainment Value
* U.S Tour w/ O Pioneers!!! begins next week (10/20 -11/04)
* Self-Titled 7″ still available from Square Up Records

——————————————————————————————————

In an attempt to infringe on more copyrights and spend less money in two and a half minutes than any other band has dared in the past, Canadian punk quartet Junior Battles has unveiled the video for “Basements.”

Created by members of the the band in one coffee-fueled night of stealing and editing, the video not only spits in the face of trademark law, but also the memory of nearly every movie from my childhood. To view the zero budget greatness, go here.

“Basements” is the first single from the Toronto outfit’s Self-Titled 7″, which was released earlier this year on Square Up Records. Copies of the vinyl are still available from the label. The 4-song effort can also be downloaded for free from our friends at If You Make It.

Beginning next week, Junior Battles will embark on a two week tour of the U.S. with Houston’s O Pioneers!!!. The bands toured together earlier this year and recently shared a Split 7″ on Kiss Of Death Records.

On a semi-related note, last week an apparently starved-for-content AV Club featured O Pioneers!!! in an article titled “Viva Hate: 15 anti-Morrissey songs.” The accompanying video spotlights a live performance of the song by front man Eric Solomon with 3/4 of Junior Battles as his backing band.

As always, if you’d like to attend a show or speak with the band, drop me a line here.

HELEN EARTH BAND – World Premiere for New Video on Rock Sound
——————————————————————————————————

* UK magazine debuts “Shakencutt
* Our Own Ghost City streaming exclusively on Punknews.org
* Band seeks new drummer

——————————————————————————————————

Helen Earth Band recently premiered the second video from its critically-acclaimed debut album, Our Own Ghost City. “Shakencutt” was released exclusively on Rock Sound and follows up the band’s first video for “(We All) Talk With Knives.”

The majority of the Shakencutt video was created using still photos – a total of 5,334 – taken with a Canon 5D Mark II and a 35mm prime lens by photographer Phill Tornroth. The video was directed and edited by Helen Earth Band vocalist / guitarist Marc Allen.

You can stream Our Own Ghost City in its entirety exclusively on Punknews.org.

The Southern California outfit is also actively seeking a new drummer. If you are interested in auditioning please contact the band: info@helenearthband.com

Having played in bands ranging from the Jon Rauhouse Sextet to Counterfit to Finch, the members of Helen Earth Band have a vast and varied history. The group is one of those rare entities that appeal to both the musician and the music fan. The band combines powerful melodies with a striking depth, creating songs that are accessible yet tastefully complex. Helen Earth Band chases symmetry and pushes its music to the pinnacle while using space and restraint to broaden the dynamics within each track. The band abounds with complex rhythms, textured guitar, intertwining harmonies and atmospheric undertones. Still, the songs are never betrayed: only enhanced by the band’s ambitious and keen musical ear. Practicing a true independent spirit, Helen Earth Band has blazed its own trail strictly on its own terms.
