DIKEMBE Joins TINY ENGINES

• Debut LP Broad Shoulders out early 2012
• Exclusive song stream @ Alternative Press
• Live Video: “Sorry I Can’t Stick Around
• Limited-edition tape (Jeremy Records) available @ FEST

——————————————————————————–

Tiny Engines (Tigers Jaw, CSTVT, Look Mexico, Restorations) is stoked to welcome Gainesville, FL’s Dikembe to its growing family of bands. The label will release the quartet’s debut full-length, Broad Shoulders, on 12″ vinyl and digital formats in early 2012. Pre-orders will launch at the beginning of December.

Featuring front man Steven Gray and bassist Ryan Willems from fellow Tiny Engines roster mates Wavelets – as well as members of Senders (Kiss of Death) and The Young Hookers – Dikembe is putting the final touches on the 11-song LP, which is its first official physical release. Earlier this year the outfit released a free digital EP, Chicago Bowls, to a good amount of blogosphere and message board acclaim. You can download those four songs here.

To celebrate today’s announcement, the band and label have teamed up with the folks at Alternative Press to debut the song “Librarians Kill For That Kind Of Quiet” Swing by the site and listen to the exclusive stream of this brand new track here.

While we’re on the topic of new cuts from Broad Shoulders, Dikembe recently premiered a live video at Punknews.org for “Sorry I Can’t Stick Around.” Shot by Jeremy Silveira at Turkey Town in Gainesville, go here to watch the band kill it with a live version of what will be the album closer. Additionally, this past summer four piece contributed “That’s How What Works” to the Topshelf Records 2011 Label Sampler. This compilation features some of the very best of the underground emo / punk scenes, including CSTVT, Pianos Become The Teeth, Touché Amoré, Moving Mountains, Restorations, Balance And Composure, La Dispute, Grown Ups, Everyone Everywhere, Bars Of Gold and much much more. To download the track from Dikembe and 67 other amazing songs, go here.

In related news, Dikembe will be making a hometown appearance at The FEST this weekend. The boys play at Loosey’s on Sunday at 7:40 p.m. alongside fellow Tiny Engines outfit Restorations, as well as Nightlights, Junior Battles, Dig It Up, Failures Union and more. Dikembe will have copies of a “FEST-exclusive” cassette tape from Jeremy Records titled Every Time You See Me I Look Like I Hit The Lotto Twice. The tape is limited to 30 copies and includes two new songs from Broad Shoulders, the four tracks from Chicago Bowls as well as offerings from six other Florida bands you should be listening to.

Finally, it’s worth noting that a big chunk of the Tiny Engines’ roster (Tigers Jaw, Look Mexico, Annabel, Wavelets, the previously mentioned Restorations and of course, Dikembe) will be playing at FEST this weekend. For a quick recap and show details, go here. Check em out and say hi for us!

Be sure to follow Tiny Engines’ Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter pages for more exclusive streams, mp3s and videos from Dikembe over the next month!

WAVELETSPre-Order Debut Full-Length from Tiny Engines

Athaletics 12″ LP out Nov 29, 2011
• Digital release today via Bandcamp + iTunes
• Download free mp3s from RCRD LBL + PureGrainAudio
• Test pressing contest, limited-edition prints, FEST show + more!

——————————————————————————–

Athaletics, the debut full-length from Gainesville, FL’s Wavelets is now available for pre-order from Tiny Engines (Tigers Jaw, CSTVT, Look Mexico, Restorations). The 12″ LP will see a November 29, 2011 release date, while the digital version is out today via Bandcamp and iTunes. It’s also worth noting that all vinyl pre-orders come with an instant mp3 download for the 9-song album.

Pressed on 180 gram vinyl, Athaletics is limited to 500 on three colorways (75 clear / 150 transparent red / 275 black) and includes a hand-screened insert and an mp3 download code. The first 50 pre-orders will receive a limited-edition, hand-screened print with exclusive artwork by Wavelets’ drummer, Lee Kraft. Additionally, all pre-orders will be entered to win a test pressing of the record.

Tiny Engines and Wavelets recently teamed up with RCRD LBL and PureGrainAudio.com to give away two new tracks from Athaletics. Download free mp3s for “Cannonball” and “Cam Taylor Is So American Kushball” here and here.

Additionally, Wavelets was recently included on the Topshelf Records 2011 Label Sampler. This compilation features some of the very best of the underground emo / punk scenes, including Pianos Become The Teeth, Touché Amoré, Moving Mountains, Balance And Composure, La Dispute, Grown Ups, Bars Of Gold and much much more … not to mention most of the Tiny Engines Roster as well. To download “My Dad The Manatee” from Wavelets, plus 67 other amazing songs, go here.

Recorded by Matt Finch and Ryan Williams at Black Bear Studios (Hot Water Music, Chris Wollard, City Of Ships), Athaletics traverses nine tracks of somersaulting, emotionally charged indie rock (let’s just call it emo) that initially feels a little out of place in relation to the tuneful, gruff punk that Gainesville and its bearded denizens have become known for. Still, great music transcends scenes, genres and geographical limitations; in that sense Wavelets is thriving with its boundless energy and freewheeling, friends-first attitude … not to mention the outfit’s ability to create music that is both intricately complex and instantly catchy. It’s this unique blend of technicality and structural ingenuity that initially grabs our attention, but it’s Athaletics comforting nostalgia and sense of fun that really wins us over and begs for repeat spins. Recommended for fans of Algernon Cadwallader, Street Smart Cyclist and Weatherbox.

Since its 2009 inception, Wavelets has self-released a handful of digital EPs and singles, as well as a 7″ split with hometown brethren, Senders. To download the band’s full discography, go here. Also, if you have an extra minute, do yourself a favor and download the new EP from Dikembe, which features Wavelets front man Steven Gray as well as bassist Ryan Willems.

Finally, don’t forget to catch Wavelets at this year’s FEST 10 in Gainesville. The band will be playing on Friday (10/28) at Bar 1982 with Grown Ups, Spraynard, Go Rydell, Nightmares For A Week and more. For additional information, go here.

Topshelf Records Release Debut LP from By Surprise

BY SURPRISE – Mountain Smashers Debut LP Available Now

——————————————————————————————————

* Mountain Smashers vinyl out this week on Topshelf Records
* Download tracks exclusively at RCRD LBL and Rock Sound
* Y Rock Studio Session on WXPN’s The Key in Philly
* Full Album Stream on Punknews.org

——————————————————————————————————

Topshelf Records (Grown Ups, My Heart To Joy, Pianos Become The Teeth) is excited to announce the debut 12″ from By Surprise (Haddon Heights, NJ), Mountain Smashers, is now available. First pressing of the vinyl will be limited to 500 (400 Black and 100 Smoke). Friend Of Mine in Japan will be releasing a CD version in early Summer.

To celebrate this week’s release, you can download two tracks from Mountain Smashers. Check out “Realometer on RCRD LBL and “$600 Exorcism” on Rock Sound. You can also stream the album in its entirety on Punknews.org.

Also, the band recently did a Y Rock Studio Session where they performed six songs. You can listen/download those songs at WXPN’s local music blog The Key.

Safely guarded behind four pairs of glasses and an arsenal of awkward tendencies, the members of By Surprise have spent an equal amount of time combing through the forgotten dust-filled grooves of 7-inch records released during the 90s indie label boom, as they have with the off-beat and inspirational works of Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, and Douglas Adams. Mountain Smashers, the band’s first full-length album, romanticizes with the feelings of reluctance we’ve all felt towards growing up, slowing down, losing touch, and selling out. Clocking in at thirty minutes, it combines both the influence of those dusty 7” records, often overlooked, with the lessons learned from the aforementioned authors. It admits defeat, while exuding reassurance. It questions the norms, while embracing the inevitable. The guitars are loud and the feedback bleeds, the vocals clash in uniformed motion, and the lyrics are kind of weird. It’s by far the band’s most focused effort to date, and in some ways, it’s their most adventurous.

Mountain Smashers was recorded in the band’s hometown of Haddon Heights, NJ at The Gradwell House with Dave Downham of Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, and was mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. Weston, bassist of Shellac and an also elder statesman of the independent music scene, has also worked on records with such bands as Archers of Loaf, Boys Life, Polvo, The Get Up Kids, Vitreous Humor, Sebadoh, and LCD Soundsystem.

Octaves – US Tour

OCTAVES – U.S. Tour (01/01 – 01/29)
——————————————————————————————————

* In support of debut Greener Pastures
* Touring with recent Topshelf Records signees Caravels
* Pre-production for new full-length with Mike York of Pianos Become The Teeth

——————————————————————————————————

Beginning on January 1st, 2011, Baltimore’s Octaves will embark on a month-long tour of the United States in support of its newest album, Greener Pastures, which was released earlier this year by Hotfoot Records.

Joining the Maryland five-piece will be recent Topshelf Records signees Caravels (Las Vegas, NV). The two bands will be touring throughout much of the Midwest and Southwest, as well as a two-week run along the West Coast. Also appearing for a five-date stretch will be Denver, CO’s Solar Bear.

Though Octaves takes its hardcore cues from the likes of Dillinger Escape Plan, The Chariot and Pg. 99, Greener Pastures brings a certain level of melody and experimental acumen to the mix as well. Sure, these eight blistering tracks may find their biggest fans in those who prefer their music to be chaotic and absolutely relentless, but the band’s tendency to play around with intriguing soundscapes will attract more than just the casual listener. It’s here where the fractured structures and turn-on-a-dime dynamics share equal billing with the outfit’s ability to serve songs with a spoonful of something sweeter, putting Octaves at the top of the hardcore heap and making the possibility of future endeavors all the more exciting.

On that note, Octaves has been writing songs for its next full-length, and in February it will begin pre-production with Mike York from fellow Baltimore brothers-in-arms, Pianos Become The Teeth. Final recording plans are TBA, but expect more substantial touring in March and April.

Currently the band is streaming several tracks from Greener Pastures on its myspace page and you can download album opener “Fix The Fern Back” here (free mp3).

- Eight tracks of utmost fury … Octaves could easily make a great name for themselves in the genre.Absolutepunk.net
- Every Time I Die seems like an obvious influence, but Octaves pack more chaos and whirlwind energy. Pastepunk.com
- The hardcore outfit has been making their mark with contemptuous songs bearing the great flag of extermination with melody.NoiseCreep
- The chaotic nature of The Chariot, the poetic yelling of La Dispute or older Mewithoutyou, mixed with the ferocity of The Bled.DecoyMusic.com
- Greener Pastures has the tremendous ability to grab people’s attention, while offering an exhilarating, yet accessible debut album.Audiocandy+radio

BEARTRAP PR Bands Are FEST-ing!

• Catch our bands as they tour to FEST 9 in Gainesville, FL (Oct 29 – 31)
• Real question remains, “How many soused, bearded punks can one city hold?”

——————————————————————————————————

It’s that time of year again, where what feels like half the Beartrap Roster asks Will and I, “Can you send out a press release regarding our tour to the FEST?”

So instead of saying “yes” 18 separate times, we decided to compose one all-encompassing FEST 9 press release. It not only highlights when and where our bands are playing during the upcoming Halloween weekend, but all the shows surrounding these three debauched days in Gainesville, FL as well. It’s basically just a friendly heads up for anyone attending the No Idea-sponsored festival or living in towns through which the bands are touring.

Check out the relevant information below for these bands: After The Fall, Annabel, Banquets, Bars Of Gold, Billy Wallace, Campaign, Carpenter, Charles The Osprey, Franz Nicolay, Go Rydell, Grown Ups, imadethismistake, Junior Battles, One Win Choice, Pianos Become The Teeth, PJ Bond, Static Radio NJ and The Great Explainer.

If you’d like to speak with any of the bands or have any guest list requests, drop me a line here.

Pianos Become The Teeth – Old Pride LP Pre-Order

PIANOS BECOME THE TEETHOLD PRIDE LP Available For Pre-Order
——————————————————————————————————

* Pre-orders from Topshelf Records start today
* Old Pride streaming at Punknews.org
* Summer tour on the horizon

——————————————————————————————————

Topshelf Records (Defeater, My Heart To Joy) – in partnership with Mayfly Records – is excited to announce that Old Pride, the sophomore album from hardcore outfit Pianos Become The Teeth, is now available for Pre-Order.

Originally released on CD format by Topshelf in January 2010, the critically acclaimed album will see a limited first pressing of 500 12″ vinyl, split between green and white/green colored wax. All LPs will come with a digital download card as well as a 32×22 inch poster. To secure your copy, go here.

Additionally, Old Pride is streaming in its entirety at Punknews.org. The album’s first track, “Filial,” is still available for free download (mp3) as well.

Screamo is dead. Or at least that is what some people say. However, Pianos Become The Teeth begs to differ. The band turns the oversaturated and overproduced genre upside down with an album so powerful and so brave it can only be compared to the legends that preceded it. Mixing elements of hardcore, post rock and screamo, Old Pride breathes new life into a once decaying scene. Pianos Become The Teeth has a melodic yet uncompromising sound that showcases a diverse set of influences. Brimming with sincerity and brandishing an experimental ambiance, the band is pushing beyond the boundaries of a stale genre with poetic lyrics and an impassioned delivery. Screamo is dead? The skeptics might want to listen to Old Pride before making such bold proclamations.

In related news, Pianos Become The Teeth is gearing up for its 40+ day US Summer Tour from June 11th – July 21. Full itinerary will be announced soon but you can check out the tentative schedule at the band’s Myspace page.

“Their screamo peers — past or present — should be more than envious.” – Alternative Press (4/5)
“Euphoric, exhilarating and utterly discordant … the kind of band that allows you to feel young, nervous and excited about music again. Powerful, majestic, important and truly fantastic from start to finish.” – Rock Sound (9/10)
“Finally, the screamo genre has moved forward again.” – Deckfight
“Artfully elegant and resplendent instrumental passages, decimating with torturously emotional screamed catharsis.” – Strange Glue
“An 8 song powerhouse of unabashed hardcore and screamo intertwined with building crescendos and post-rock interludes that make it just as unique as it is impressively devastating.” – Bedwetting Cosmonaut
“… F*cking amazing.” – Indie Rock Reviews (9.2/10)

The Saddest Landscape – Recording / New Releases / European Tour

THE SADDEST LANDSCAPE – Recording / New Releases / European Tour
——————————————————————————–

* Recording for new full-length begins this weekend
* Split 9″ with Pianos Become The Teeth
* June European tour

——————————————————————————–

The Saddest Landscape will be heading into the studio this weekend to begin work on its first full-length record since 2003. The band is currently weighing its label options but the record should see a late Summer / early Fall 2010 release.

You might not know who The Saddest Landscape is but you should. Originally formed in 2002, the Boston-based band quickly made a name for itself in the screamo underground with multiple releases and splits with greats like The Pine and Funeral Diner.

After being dormant for 2006 and 2007, the band reconvened to play a few European shows in 2008, which would eventually lead to The Saddest Landscape’s reemergence in 2009 and the band’s first new release since 2005, a split 7″ with Trophy Scars on Bear Records. Also of note, in the Winter of 09 the band released a 2xLP vinyl discography, All Is Apologized For. All Is Forgiven., on its own Cover Your Heart Records.

The Saddest Landscape is also excited to announce Just Say No! Records will be releasing a split 9″ (yes, 9″!) with the great Pianos Become The Teeth this summer. The band will contribute songs to “Connections Vol II” as well, which is an international compilation from Sweden’s Moment of Collapse featuring six bands from six different countries.

And if that wasn’t enough, The Saddest Landscape will be heading back to Europe in June. Among the dates to be announced, the band will be headlining the legendary Cry Me A River Festival in Germany.

In other Top Shelf news, the Vinyl Pre-Order for Rooftops’ debut album, A Forest Of Polarity, starts this Thursday (04/01/10). No April Fools joke here!

Rooftops takes its brand of intricate math pop and layers it generously with acoustic guitars, horns, strings and percussion. The resulting arrangements create an impressive sound uniting math rock and post rock into something bold, new and exciting. The band adds vocals to the mix only sparingly but at brilliantly timed intervals for maximum effect. It is the bold, unbridled enthusiasm of math rock harnessed only by the restraints and subtle nuances of post rock. A Forest Of Polarity is the sound of two becoming one. Can you hear it?

The band is streaming songs from A Forest Of Polarity on its Myspace page. Additionally, you can download an mp3 for the song “Raft Easily” here.
