Imagine that you reside in a modest, working class Boston neighborhood. You’ve been part of an admittedly incestuous music scene, playing local punk bands for nearly a decade.  You enjoy grabbing a cold beer or two (or five) after work.  You hate the Yankees, love the Sox…and you’d be hard pressed to choose between Let It Be and Tim…although truth be told, you kind of prefer Sorry Ma anyway.

Given these circumstances, there’s a really good chance that you play in The Cold Beat and you just released Dumbwiater, an impressive debut chock-full of ragged, messy and honest rock ‘n’ roll anthems.

Featuring current members of Where The Land Meets The Sea and former members of Lock And Key, The Call Up, inblackandwhite and The Murder Mile, The Cold Beat isn’t trying to hide their obvious Replacements influence, but it’s apparent that there’s a respect for modern punk aesthetics as well… especially given the band’s pedigree.  Still, Dumbwaiter is more about writing really fun songs you’d want to play with your three best friends.  There’s a drunken authenticity behind the chugging guitars and rollicking bass lines, and when lead singer Chris Amaral lets loose with a raspy growl, there’s a tinge of desperation and urgency in his voice that you just can’t fake.

It’s all guts and (probably) no glory with The Cold Beat, but that doesn’t stop them from cranking out some truly vibrant, gritty rock songs with undeniable staying power.  And while there may be real muscle and gusto behind these tunes, there’s also plenty of unforgettable riffs, sky-high choruses and soaring harmonies to remind the listener that this four piece has real songwriting chops.  Factor in the little touches – squalls of feedback and reverb, and the occasional tender moment – and Dumbwaiter has an abundance of memorable moments, not to mention a ton of promise for The Cold Beat’s future.

Dumbwaiter was recorded by Mike Vera and mastered by Nick Zampiello (Piebald, Isis, Cave In, Pelican) at New Alliance in Cambridge, MA.  The EP will be self-released by the band on April 28, 2009.  For more information, go to www.myspace.com/thecoldbeat.
