Timing is everything. In fact, The Color Wheels would not exist if not for one of those rare coincidental moments. You see, right around the same time singer/songwriter Jon Sebastian was struggling through a creative dry spell, his wife Psalm asked her husband to teach her to play drums. Just as any good husband would do, Jon obliged and decided to write some songs the two could play together. Unknowingly, on that day, The Color Wheels were born.

Rejuvenated by this fun, new endeavor, Sebastian proceeded to write a brilliant collection of simple, yet entirely charming indie pop songs. One thing lead to another and eventually the pair was recording demos for friends all around town. The husband and wife duo began sharpening their skills by playing shows at atypical venues such as public libraries, community colleges, and living rooms.

Recorded over the course of two years with Psalm drumming and Jon playing guitar and singing, the Poughkeepsie, NY duo put together a batch of cunningly addictive songs that would make up The Color Wheels self-titled debut album. Although songs about pirate ships, playing house and pitching tents may seem inconsequential at first, do not be fooled by their masked simplicity. Therein lays the undeniable heart and contagious innocence of The Color Wheels. Behind the infectious guitars and sparkling melodies of The Color Wheels lies perfectly crafted power pop with a surprising attention to detail. An even closer listen reveals a clever take on the awkwardness of emerging adolescence. “Trying to resist temptation while at the same time being confused and consumed by it,” Jon Sebastian explains. That is the beauty of The Color Wheels. No matter which way you spin it, the sound always ends up magical. And the timing of course was brilliant.

The Color Wheels are Jon & Psalm Sebastian. All songs by Jon Sebastian except “Superjet Waterslide” by Abe Germano. The Color Wheels was recorded at The Space Recording Studio in Poughkeepsie, NY and was produced and engineered by Jacques Cohen (Mercury Rev, The Brides, Agit Pop). The Color Wheels was released by Viper Bite Records on October 7th, 2008. For more info go to www.thecolorwheels.com or www.viperbiterecords.com.
