Work Tapes (TMvFM)

Somewhere in the scattered graveyards between post-punk and indie rock, Thinking Machines humbly reside. The Philadelphia-based band has quietly built up an impressive discography that spans close to ten years now. Thinking Machines return in 2010 with Work Tapes, their highly anticipated follow up to 2008’s critically-acclaimed A Complete Record of Urban Archaeology.

A trio on their last album, Work Tapes sees Thinking Machines beefing up to a 4-piece and the results are intoxicating. The guitar onslaught of the band is expanded and more dynamic. Conjuring the ghosts of indie, shoegaze, metal and new wave guitar heroes this is a band for listeners who like their guitars thick and their riffs thicker. The rhythm section locks in more than ever before with syncopated beats, math-rock timings and low- end heaviness. The band moves sharply with angular precision and tuneful melodies. Work Tapes is a guitar-driven rock album with a post-punk attitude and sure purpose. Thinking Machines are poised and prepped for a car stereo barreling down a highway off a bridge and into the sea.
